How to repair/recover XP Pro?

I have a DELL Latitude D505 laptop with Windows XP Pro installed, but it will not boot to Windows in any mode (normal, safe, last known good config, etc.). After a few minutes, a blue screen appears with the error:

    Stop: C0000221 Bad Image Checksum
The Shell32.DLL file may be corrupt...blah blah...

I ran a few hard drive tests using diagnostic software and the drive itself looks to be ok (30GB drive).

I now have a DELL XP Pro Installation CD installed in the laptop now. I tried to get XP to "Repair" using the Setup program, but it does not show it as an option (only a full install is available on the partition), so I am now in the Recovery Console.

What command should I use to repair the current XP installation? I do NOT want to lose any data on the hard drive if at all possible!

Should I use FIXBOOT, FIXMBR, or another command? Any other steps needed to repair the current install of XP?

    HELP! Thanks in advance =)

Their are two different Repair modules in XP. One takes you to the DOS level mode, the other recopies your entire XP software, (without removing programs and such). Either one should allow you to fix the file that is damaged. One the one that repairs with a fresh install, be careful, because I think you could lose your other programs.

A program like Nortons WinDoctor, may in fact fix the problem if you can get a copy. WinDoctor has fixed several bad registry problems for me that made my system unstable. Try it. Good luck.

Method 1: Extract a New Copy of the User32.dll File from the Windows XP CD

Extract a new copy of the User32.dll file from the Windows XP CD to the drive:\Windows\System32 folder on your hard disk, where drive is the drive on which Windows is installed: 1.Insert a Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or Microsoft Windows 98 Startup disk into your computer, and then restart the computer.

NOTE: For additional information about what to do if you do not have a Windows Millennium Edition or Windows 98 Startup disk, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 186300 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/186300/EN-US/) How to Create a Windows 98 Startup Disk from MS-DOS

2.When the Windows Startup menu appears, use the ARROW keys to select Start Computer with CD-ROM Support, and then press ENTER. 3.Make a note of the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.4.Rename the User32.dll file to User32.old. To do so, type the following lines at the command prompt, pressing ENTER after each line, where Drive is the drive on which Windows is installed:Drive:
    cd windows\system32
    ren user32.dll user32.old
5.Insert the Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.6.Extract a new copy of the User32.dll file from the Windows XP CD to the Windows\System32 folder on your hard disk. To do so, type the following lines at a command prompt, pressing ENTER after each line, where CDROMDrive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD-ROM, and Drive is the drive on which Windows is installed:a:
    extract CDROMDrive:\i386\user32.dl_ Drive:\windows\system32\user32.dll
For example, if your CD-ROM is drive E and Windows is installed on drive C, type extract e:\i386\user32.dl_ c:\windows\system32\user32.dll, and then press ENTER.7.Remove the Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition startup disk from your computer, and then restart the computer.

I just read it through, anyway, just do the following in the recovery console:

    cd windows\system32
    ren user32.dll user32.old

map (enter) to find your cdrom drive letter.

    extract CDROMDrive:\i386\user32.dl_ Drive:\windows\system32\user32.dll

replace cdromdrive with your drive letter for you cdrom.
