How to "Save", elsewhere"?

Ok, as this is more of a "Software" question/thing than a "Malware" thing, I'll ask here, to see if maybe I can move-on with the part of the process that I'm "stuck" in (for three hours now), over there.

Having trouble knowing HOW to "save" these different tools in different places. Specifically, at the moment, how to save MGTools (even though I believe that it's still on this PC from downloading it a year ago?).

When I go to save it, it (the pop-up box/window) is set to save in the Desktop by default (and yes, I've already changed that to; "Ask me where to save files", in Firefox>Tools>Options).

When I click-on the drop-down box to try to save it elsewhere, the drop-down box is "bare" ... nothing drops down except an empty/clear drop-down box ... it's empty ... nothing else there ... no other option(s).

As I said, I just need to know how to make that drop-down box work (display some options), so I can continue doing what I was told to do over there.

    Thanks in advance ...

You can save MGTools to your desk top....then double click on Computer / double click on your C:\ drive and drag the desktop icon for MGTools onto that window. It will now be on the C drive as it should be. The other tools download to your desktop as well where you will install them.

Do not use your old MGTools as it is way out of date!!

Got it (at least on the 'not using the old MGTools/out of date' thing).

    I think I understand the other part as well ... or at least I'll figure-it-out ... I think ...

    Thanks to all ......

Well I dragged the icon into Computer ("C:\" window), and now it's "gone". Disappeared. - ?

    There's a MGTools entry/folder or whatever there - from March 2008 - but that's it?

Lastly, there is still the "icon" along the bottom here (Status Bar?) from the download (I use the "Download Statusbar" add-on for Firefox). Is that of any help here for me?

It is "Read-only" protected - and I cannot seem to UN-protect it. Every time I try/do - it reverts back to being protected ... with the box "checked" again (even from admin).

Well, it DID let me delete it - but that's a new one on me. Previously when I've tried to delete items such as that (Read-only) I have not been able to get rid of them - but this time it went away (?) ... "thanks", I guess?

I so do NOT understand all of this "stuff".

"I'm thinking" I need to again download MGtools, yet when I go to clear the thumbnail from the status bar (again, using Download StatusBar), it asks: "Are you sure you wish to delete this file from your system - C:\Users\*'username'*\MGtools.exe

So, this download (from today) is still here - correct?

The download MUST be here, as it is ALSO still showing in my Firefox "Downloads" box. But where could it have "gone" (where could it be hiding?)?

Well, disregard all of this (I guess???). I decide to move "forward", and just downloaded it ... again.

I so do NOT get all this stuff ...........................................

I do not understand what problems you are having, You have posted in malware before. The instructions are very detailed.

I certainly don't wish to seem ungrateful - I am very appreciative (couldn't be more so), and you say the instructions are detailed - so they are detailed.

I say that questions arise in the normal course of 'application' (doing things) which one is not particularly familiar with (a good number of questions - unfortunately ... in my case).

I am not inclined to computer-science or computer-tech "application assumption" ("guessing"). I have had questions along the way, and if I were to assume - well - everyone gets "unhappy" if I assume wrongly - right?

I don't do these types of things on any sort of a regular basis (I check email, surf the web, try to stay secure and "tweak" as I can to increase my speed) ... that's pretty much it.

Additionally, I suppose that I'm getting rather "long in the tooth" ("old") to boot - and never had one-days worth of formal training in this stuff. I don't work with computers for a living - and never have.

I (currently) live in an EXTREMELY isolated (very rural) area - I have NO ONE to "go-to" or "find" if things "go wrong" (go badly) here in the process of doing this (blue screens, black screens, lost internet connection or whatever) - and that makes for quite an elevated sense of s~T-r*E-s~S.

Lastly, there are some "inconsistencies" in the READ & RUN ME which I am not complaining about, just merely mentioning.

The first one (that comes to mind) is in the SAS configuration instructs, where it says (under Vista Cleaning Procedure>SAS - running and getting a log): "In SUPERAntiSpyware under Configuration ..." ... well, there is no "Configuration" tab or button (at least not in my copy of the program). I decided to move-forward by 'assuming' that I should disregard looking for "Configuration", and find "Preferences" instead, which was clear-enough, and which I did.

That brings to mind further back where it said: "... because when the Scan begins, any browser windows that are open will be closed."

SAS did not close the browser, even though I had done this part >exactly>: "Under Scanner Options make sure that only the following are Unchecked (make sure all others are checked ):

    * Scan only know file types
    * Scan for tracking cookies
    * Display scan option in Explorer context (right click) menu"

I, realizing after a few minutes that the browser was still open (behind the SAS Scan screen) went in and closed it then. I hope and pray that you won't tell me this tainted the scan (?).

And I never did see/find this tab/button: "Back on the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software" ... I found only: "Scan your computer." - but assumed that-that was what was meant.

You folks do this everyday. Some of us hardly ever perform "operations" anywhere near as complex (complex in that they must - as the instructions repeatedly mention - be followed to the letter).

I am NOT complaining. I'm simply trying to do this correctly - the first time.

And for the malware fighters here (such as yourself) that freely & graciously offer their services, I would think, that-that too (me wanting to be certain of the procedure and process by asking questions), would also, be appreciated?

    That's all - thanks.

PS - I am currently "stuck" ... again ... in the Read & Run Me (that's why I'm writing this whole long post here now as opposed to trying to get my PC together for someone to take a peek at). I Posted my query there: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1336454#post1336454

    Hi Glenn,

If you're where I think you are at and finished the scan, rebooted, next step would be this:

Look two lines down, think you're tired and should take a break, or your window is not open all the way.

*After you Save whatever downloaded file/document/application to your chosen directory - right-click the download shown on the Download StatusBar and choose "Clear from bar"... NOT "Delete from system" <--- this will in fact delete your "save" no matter where you put it.

Thanks doc - but I am so punch-drunk at this point, I'm not even certain of what you're perfectly concise and simple reply means here at the moment. That (Download StatusBar thumbnail) is looooong gone now. I am trying ~ DESPERATELY ~ to get through the READ & RUN ME in Malware - and it is as bad (as difficult for me) as it was a year ago. If anything, it may be worse in that I "should" have a year (+) more knowledge/understanding now - but apparently not.

I (for the life of me) do not know how you-all stare at these screens all day like this. My eyeball feel like a couple of smoked sausage hanging off the top/front of my face - and I'm sure that they look like a couple of fried (and sugar-glistened) Fruit L0Ops ............... (probably look somethin' like this --> -o+0- ......or this--> -O+0- .... or this--> -*u*- ... or this --> +..+ or this--> *_* ????????????

Thanks just the same though. I do think I know what you meant, but I am well-beyond it now ...........
