how to secure my netgear wgr614v6

I don't think that its secure how do i check this ? when i go to the ip address i have to put the user name and password in to get onto the site dose that mean its secure ? thank you.

A router password doesn't mean that the router's ACCESS is restricted, only the CONFIGURATION is restricted by the password.

Check your wireless security settings in the configuration (WEP, WPA, WPA2, etc. should be enabled... at LEAST WPA or higher, WEP is old and easily hacked). It should have the ability to set the wireless password (which you will need to connect to the router).

You need to change the routers default log in password also if you have not already done this... i think it is something like.... user>admin...Password>password..
You must change the password.

 

Yes i have changed it from the factory user & password from admin & passwor to the one i choose.

 

I have a DG834 and i have the wireless setting on WPA2-PSK with an 8 key phrase, in that mode the key is constantly changing enscription making it virtually impossible to hack, only users with the pre-shared key can access the internet via your router.

Do you have an option for WPA2-PSK as this is a stronger more secure encrypion mode for Wi-Fi. If not don't worry as WPA-PSK is still stronger than WEP and is still very secure for your routers wireless access.

 

I don't think so its an older router friend.From what info i have provided dose it look like its secured ?

 

Forgot to add also to use your own generated key and not the one supplied with your router. mixed letters and numbers 8 to 64 keys long (i find that 8 keys long is enough) write it down as you will need to enter this into your computer also on first use!!

 

Are you referring to the passphrase ? if so the one i entered is 14 digits long.

 

If you are using WPA-PSK and your own generated key then I can safely say that you are TOTALLY SECURE and will have no worries about any one else using your internet connection without your permission.

Thanks for all the good help just one last question without a laptop or other things that connect to the internet is there any way to test it ? You'd never know it but i'm a super mod at a satellite forum..........lol

 

there is some sites out there that you can test your security with, downloadable programs that will try to de-crypt your key and test it's vunrabilities,better you test it than some hacker sitting in a car outside!!!!
googling it will throw some results up for you.
