How to stop messenger from booting up?

Hi all.....
Well I have my brand new Dell desktop, (very chuffed with it) that I bought largely based on some very good advice and recommendations from this very site. It is a 2.8 ghz, running XP, with 512 Ram......(and a 17" flat panel monitor, which I have always wanted!)
I just want to know, how does one stop Messenger from booting up every time the computer connects to the net?
I have already gone to 'options' and unchecked the 'Run this program when windows starts' box, but it keeps starting anyway!!!
Am I missing something?

 

This is a Windows annoyance. You can remove messenger all together. If you want to use it you can download v.6.2 from Microsoft's website.

Open a command prompt (start menu, run, type 'cmd').

At the cursor cut and paste the following:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

After it completes you may have to restart. Than it will ask to "cleanup" your settings, click yes.

 

Or you can just go into messenger, go to options, and then uncheck that it will start up when your computer starts.

 

Do you mean Windows Messenger that delivers ads to your computer? OR MSN Messenger the Instant Messenger client?

 

Yes as I said I have unchecked the 'start program when windows starts' box.....I do use messenger, and want to keep it, but I don't want it to start when I logon.

Is deleting it and downloading another version the only way?
