This "THING" ( a part of Microsoft Works) keeps Starting itself (as I am seeing it from Windows Software Explorer, within Windows Defender - even though I have "Disabled" it there numerous times).

I am pretty sure that I don't need it to "Start", and have it "Running" ALL the time.

Which is THE BEST procedure (in XP) to CUT IT OFF ... please?

    Thanks in advance,

    Hi GRC

Its Microsoft Works updater app, to turn off or disable it you can use StartupCPL or CCLeaners Startup list to disable it from the startup list.

If via Windows Update, your Works application updates, then the updater will be re-turned on each time so would need disabling again after a Works update, many applications after you update them add their startup updaters back to the startup run list.

Hi HALO - and thank you very much!

I suppose that is the only method of handling it, other than uninstalling MS Works (?).

I'm wondering now though if I (we, here) even "need" Works?? I mean, I know there are other (and probably better) online programs to substitute, but can I uninstall Works, and still keep MS Word (which I "think" [?] I would prefer to do at this point [KEEP Word])?

    Thanks Again,
    Glenn ...

    Hi Glenn

Quick question, do you have Microsoft Office and its Word installed as well as Microsoft Works? if you have both then personally I would uninstall Works and stick with MS Office and its Word.

As mentioned Works only has a form of Word and not the full version, so if you dont use the other parts of Works as in the Calendar, Spreadsheet apps etc then as we have mentioned in the past and you want a more higher end Office application, then the alternate from Sun in Open Office is good.

But if your not doing much Office type work on Spreadsheets, Word Processing etc then Works is fine, BTW what version Works do you have?

You could look through the menus in Works to check on if its possible to disable the updater apart from what I have already posted, dont have access to Works to check the location for you if it exists, but Startup CPL or even CCleaners Startup disable option is good ( but once Works updates again through WU then you may need to disable again )

    Hi Halo and thanks.

I am not presently at that particular PC (for several more days), but no, I don't believe it has MS Office (that would be the program I would have had to pay extra for I believe - [correct?] and that PC only has XP Home Edition).

By "version", I think you mean XP Home - right? It was purchased in mid-2002.

I do apologize, it seems that a lot of this "stuff" proves to be a blur to me, especially the Microsoft stuff (Word, Works, Wordpad, etc., etc.). I mean, I know (and reasonably understand) some of the basics and differences of the various programs, but they all seem to jumble in my head at times. I suppose I "know what I know" - until I "forget", then I have to "RE-learn". I did disable the updater (per you instructions - w/CCleaner - thanks again) - and wouldn't you know - the next morning it was back "On", in Startup (must have updated overnight, I suppose).

And thanks again for the Sun Open Office suggestion. I have "tried" it (on this PC from which I am currently typing), however a big goal of mine is to keep down the "Size" of programs on that other PC. It's a six year-old PC, and only has a 20GB HD. Though again (and I am sure "others" will point-out IF I've asked this before), if Open Office is considerably smaller than the fairly equally-compatible Works/Word, etc., that I have there, then I would absolutely make the switch (I think??) - I mean, I don't want to lose any of the functionality I have with/from the MS programs far as that is concerned, for just a savings of a GB or two ... or might it be much more (space saving) than that?

Thanks again Halo - and thanks to all.

    Hi GRC

By version I mean the Version of Works, not XP. Should as in most MSFT applications be able to find the version by opening Works and clicking Help and then About.

Yes you would have had to buy Office seperatly, to have the Full version.

I would stick with Works then for compatability and usability as you'll be used to it over Open Office ( whish is easy to master but I feel you'd be more comfortable with what you already know in Works, my personal observation )

If it comes back with CCleaners startup disbaler and Win Defenders, then try StartupCPL, but I feel this maybe the same, sadly maybe one of those updaters you cannot get away from.
