How to Uninstall XP (not upgrade version)

Hello,

First a short background: My father gave my Mom his old Inspiron 8000 (PIII, 128Meg) which was running WinXP pro. Partly due to the guts of the machine, and I imagine partly due to some malware it is running incredibly slowly -- too much to bear even the simplest tasks. Consequently, I decided the best thing to do would be to format the C: drive and install Win98SE.

Unfortunately, it seems next to impossible to remove WinXP when it is not an upgrade. Does anyone have any suggestions or knowhow that might help?

You can't as such "uninstall" XP, but a reformat of the hard drive will get rid of it. Just make sure that your 98 cd is bootable.

 

Why do you want to install 98se just fdisk the HDD and format it with 98 "transfer the system files only" to the newly formatted drive and let WinXP upgrade that ?

 

And with that version of WinXP you can put the CD in and do a clean install just tell the microsoft activation people you had to replace the HDD when they ask.

 

If it's an older pc then it may be better to goto win 98. But if it is at least a 600 Mhz then I think if all is horrible you may just want to format the harddrive
