I have an HP computer with win 7 64. I had to perform a system recovery today and before doing so used hp backup files. After the recovery was complete I followed the recovery managers directions and loaded the information back onto the pc. It gave my a file called system recovery files. However, I am completely confused as to how to use it! Clicking on it, it does not appear to hold the 5 disks of information. When I look on the disk I see they are listed as wim files. How do I use this file to recover the information that was supposedly saved?

    Hi,

Give the model of HP and if you have a link to the instructions for using the recovery manager post that as well. We can take a look through the link to see what it says about retrieving the information.

The computer is an HP P6823W. I do not have any instrutions for the recovery manager. I haven't been able to find any online or on the HP forums. Basically, all it told me was to insert disks to copy the areas I wanted to save, after the recovery, it told me to insert the disks to recover the information. After I inserted the disks it gave me a folder titled system recovery files. But there doesn't seem to be any way to recover anything from this file.

Sorry, I didn't get back to you. I couldn't find a definitive answer for your model. My guess is that the recovery manager linked you to Windows Backup and that is the program that actually backed up your files. I think that because they are .wim files.

Two things you could try would be to open Windows Backup (type Backup in the Start/search box and it will appear at the top) to try to recover the files. Pointing it to the System Recovery Files folder should get you an index of the files.

Or 7zip should be able to decompress individual .wim files and make the files folders available.

If you have problems with either of these two let me know and I will find the HP links I read to try to determine which version of Recovery Manager you used. But I think that because the files are .wim files it was a Windows program that was used for backup not HP specific.

Thanks for your reply and suggestions. The files were not in the windows back so I will try 7zip.
