How to use TiVo like a VCR?

    I have purchased a used TiVo series 2, and I am having trouble setting it up. Can it be used like a vcr without having to order service? Also, I can't see the menu when I do get a picture, and I can't hear sound.

    I bought one that was made for DirectTV, and I am using DishNetwork. Would they conflict?

    that's what I just figured out, so I am going to try and get a refund as promised by the seller on eBay.
