Greetings good people.I've not been around for a long time, that being said after downloading a game patch(saved to disc and put on screen as an icon) for somthing installed already
I am trying to do this:Copy this new file over the existing scenes.dat file that's part of the game already on your computer. If you purchased the game from Big Fish Games this file is probably located in C:\Program Files\Hidden Mysteries - Civil War\Data. If you purchased it from a store it is probably located in C:\Program Files\GameMill Entertainment\Hidden Mysteries Civil War\Data.
it has got me at wits end over thinking stuff and I hope I posted in the right place/forum. the second one Gamemill is giving me fits whilst I am trying to help someone with but ran into a wall with this one. I'm not a gamer.any assist would be appreciated.Location?Location?
    Thank You

Right click the shortcut to the game and click "Properties" then the "General" tab and see if it tells you the location.

Or you could simply search your PC (using search function) to find the file.

If it's not in Prog files then maybe whoever installed it put it in a custom location, maybe on a different HDD?

You should be able to just type the file name into the dynamic search field in the Start menu, shouldn't you?

Yeah, thats what I meant by search, sorry for not being clear there. But I suggested finding the path would most likely be faster, don't know about you but my search isn't always very quick , too much junk lol

Yes,true enough however there is stilll a matter of doing what the original post stated.copying the patch into the file it is needed in,oh and btw right click and properties just tell me is is on desktop saved as an icon nothing about what and how to apply it to anything.guess I just tell them I can't do it huh?

Okay, let's back up. Unless I misunderstand you completely, you have a game installed on your computer, and a file you have downloaded that you want to patch the game with. You have the file saved to your desktop, and you need to find the folder the game was installed in, so you can get the patch to that folder.

    Here's what you do:

    Locate one of these two folders: C:\Program Files\Hidden Mysteries - Civil War\Data or C:\Program Files\GameMill Entertainment\Hidden Mysteries Civil War\Data

You will only have one of them. To find the folder, go to Computer, and open C:\, then open Program Files. In Program Files, look for either "Hidden Mysteries - Civil War" or "GameMill Entertainment". If you find "GameMill Entertainment", you will find "Hidden Mysteries - Civil War" in that folder.

In "Hidden Mysteries - Civil War" you will find the folder "Data". Copy the file you downloaded to that folder, and answer "yes" when it asks if you want to over-write the file.

    Done.

sorry about the miscue but I actually found both civil war and data both in the hidden mysteries file.right clicked data copy, right clicked civil war then paste.don't know if it worked nothing was asked about but if it did I have to wait until they say either the problem is solved or still there. in other words I will get back to this forum and you and let you all know when I know.should it have asked yes or no? machines are funny that way sometimes they do other times not.

I think I'm misunderstanding you. Based on how you described what you did, what you right-clicked on and copied is the Data folder, not the file you downloaded.

correct within the data .dat file is a scene file that needs to be put in the game, here again I am at a loss copying files over or into another file it's not a cakewalk.i.e. when I try to open that game file it launches it instead of letting another override it.this seems the number one trouble spot getting it in without starting the game.have that latop with hidden mysteries in taskbar just in case I need to get at it again which sounds like it might be the case.basically need a walkthrough overriding the game file or fixing it as it were.

here lies the main rub -getting it in or should I say coping it into the file it needs to go in?

opened the data file retrieved the scene file needed out of it dragged and dropped in into civil war.this time it asked permission to do it gave it. hope it worked now.from what was heard the problem is near the end of it whatever that means.like I said I do not game but maybe should to check it out huh?

    Wait, what?

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you're even doing anymore, what folders your working with and why you bothered downloading a file that you haven't even touched, if your posts are anything to go by.

I'm done here. I'm not going to be responsible for helping you break your friends game just because your posts are so incoherent I have no idea what you've been doing at all since this thread started. Either you can't follow instructions or you can't be bothered to try, and you seem to prefer to experiment on your own rather than wait for the next step of instructions.

Good luck, with whatever it is you're trying to do. Tell your friend not to hurt you too badly if you screw up his game beyond repair.

    this:
is uncalled for however I can wait as long as I can get an answer without the inuendos I am game to listen and or follow any help provided .respect the site and anyones input,if I get/seem unclear about anything, please feel free to ask it be put into proper context/explanation.I'll definitely do my best to help do so.
please accept my humble apology :-o

Apologies for losing my temper. I have been a bit less patient than normal lately.

Based on your posts so far you have downloaded a file that you want to use to write over a file that is in a folder on the computer. You also know where that folder is. All you need to do now is copy the file you downloaded into the folder you have located, and if you had followed the "what you do" post exactly, you would have accomplished what you wanted done. If you haven't been able to accomplish that, then at the very least you need to tell me which step you got stuck on or didn't understand, so I can clarify it.

Where I get lost is why you have decided to instead take files out of that same folder and put them back in again. That was not in my instructions at all, and that's what I was referring to when I said you're experimenting wildly without knowing what you're doing... moving the original game files won't accomplish anything at all except possibly break the game. Why are you doing that? :confused

Let's start over. And by that I mean completely start over.

Describe exactly what it is you want to do, and what you downloaded. What is the file you downloaded that you mentioned once in the first post and never since, and where did you get it from? Since you have never mentioned it again, what is the reason you downloaded it in the first place?

Then describe what kind of problems you're running into, and step by step what you have done to try and resolve them.

Keep in mind as you describe that all I know about what is happening on your end is what you choose to tell me. If your descriptions are not clear enough then I won't know what you've done and I will have no idea where to go next. As I've mentioned already, if I'm not sure what needs to be done, then rather than giving you the wrong advice I will give none at all. I'm flying blind, you're the radar. Keep the signal clear. :)

temper gets the best of us sometimes,it happens.using your post quoted to answer things you want to know.what I want to do is override the existing scenes.dat file located in data that is on her lap top screen.the folder icon says scenes but it really isn't.that folder is within the data folder which is why it was mentioned as possibly needed.we are both flying blind in this respect.reason it was downloaded was I was told when you get to a year, civil war has several 1861 -65 in 64 like all the others you must complete the scene that year to move on.that said apparently she cannot complete the scene or year being it is an object game. one that year just will not move(vanish when clicked on) thus hanging everything up.patch was found and downloaded from http://www.gunnargames.com/supportlistings.html for Hidden Mysteries - Civil War to do this:This patch has the kerosene lamp removed from the Battle of the Wilderness. There is a mysterious bug where certain users are unable to click on this item in the game. We were unable to find the direct cause of this problem, but hope that removing the item will allow everyone to get past this level. To implement the new version please follow these instructions exactly.which are confusing at best not knowing the way to copy it.

Download the file scenes.dat by clicking the button to the right. which I did.
everything after this above is from there: bare with me please.fact is I put the cd in mine and tried the scene .dat file on it so it would not mess her up.what happened was taking just that file out and putting it in civil war rendered the game useless as in it will not even launch.however if the whole data file is put in it does.very odd indeed.if it works I have no clue because like as said I do not game.I'm not sure what needs to be done or how to either but will wait for a comeback on it Not try to do anything without instuction or walk through. are we keeping the signal clear or are things getting muddy again? just checking we do not need to be or get distrought, either of us.keeping you in mind and us both sane.
if there is a problem let's address it but think I covered what needs to be said.if not please fill me in.I am not new to computers but by the same token I have a lot to learn yet as do many.

Nope, crystal clear. :) And for the record, now I feel stupid for not getting it earlier. :-D

First thing that sticks out on the page you linked to is this:If you are already stuck at the Battle of the Wilderness, you will not be able to click the kerosene lamp since it will no longer be there. You will need to start the game over with a new user profile. That means that if your friend is already stuck at the scene in 1864 then even if you're able to apply this fix and make it work, she still needs to start the game over from the beginning. My deep sympathies... starting over when you're deep in a game is never fun. :(

That aside, here goes: If you want to test the procedure out on your own computer before working on your friend's, you will of course need to install the game from the CD first. After you have installed the game, download the file from that page and save it somewhere where it's easy to find. The desktop is a good place for temporary downloads (don't use it to permanently store things.)

After you've done the above, right-click on the downloaded file and pick "copy" from the menu.

EDIT: Just to clarify, the entire "scenes.data" that you downloaded needs to be copied into the Data folder! Don't open it, just right-click the whole thing.

Now, go find the Data folder in either C:\Program Files\Hidden Mysteries - Civil War\Data or C:\Program Files\GameMill Entertainment\Hidden Mysteries Civil War\Data Since you're installing from a CD it's probably in the second of the two.

Don't open the folder Data, just right-click on it and pick "paste"

That should make the downloaded file write over the broken one that was installed from the CD.

Yes, it does sound like you've done it right. I typed up the whole process mainly so we could make sure. :)

Unfortunately you are right that the only way to find out if it worked properly is to play all the way up to that spot and see if you get stuck or not. (Good news! This might get you into gaming. LOL )

A suggestion: Keep the file you downloaded in a folder named "Civil War Kerosene Lamp" or something like that, along with a .txt file with installation instructions. It will make things a lot easier for you if you ever need to reinstall the game. :)
