I just want to know one thing, how do people get this much spyware? Just took 1944 pieces from a machine, and it still had vx2 and cws on it that I couldn't remove. Getting reinstalled. I just want to setup a windows xp machine, visit everyone spyware site and porn site I can think of and see if I can get it to the point some of these customers machines are. I'll post a screenshot later, but we're talking about 400 registry keys alone.

I found 237 the other day scanning my machine, which I do at least once a week. The only websites I visit are tech related, or cooking related. Of course, everyone says that...but I prefer my porn to come from videos or magazines, not the internet. ;) :D

Or maybe it was my mom, surfing her geneology sites? Darn those family tree researchers, anyway!

    4. no antivirus or an antivirus with a expired subscription
    5. no idea what ad aware or spybot or all the other free good programs
    exist.
    6. messenger not disabled
    7. their computer knowledge is from turning on the computer to that is it.
    8. when you say your computer has a trojan they think of prophylactics

    9. :D:D

Other than this I have no idea either:D:D

Don't forget the ever-popular clicking "YES!" to every cute little pop-up and add-on out there.

i think this is the big reason people get it. they don't bother to read the little window that pops up before they hit the yes or ok button.

    >Just took 1944 pieces from a machine,

Do you mean spyware, or cookies in general?
I removed something like 400 cookies from my sister's machine, but no virii or worms.
I guess that her needlepoint web sites aren't as virulent as porn sites ;-)

Avast found Win32.scob trojan this morning. I have had 2 trojans and nothing else since I got avast and I guess the firewall I am behind is pretty good. Second thing in almost a year.
I am a "no" girl! Opera puts popups on the bar at top so I can just click "close page" don't even know what it was.
And as for websites? I practice safe surfing and I don't need yo stinking porn!

I really wonder. My parents get spyware, viruses and trojans ALL the time! I have no idea how they get it either. I've not got any since I re-installed windows with my new motherboard last year.

Usually people just think it's easier to forget about any advice or common sense and just do what they damn well please until the machine grinds to a halt. Then hand it over to me to make it all better again.

Then repeat the above every week or so.

I sure it won't be long before all the buttons in a pop-up lead to the same result Yes, No and Close could all execute the same function. However, you don't need a pop-up to install/not install junk it could just slip through a vulnerability in Internet Explorer, especially if it's not patched.

Already been done. Blaster was the first that hunted for vulnerabilities over web & networks and installed wherever it found an opening. Not the last one either....

I've aleady found one piece of scumware that installed by hitting the "NO" button in a pop-up, so now I close them by hitting the X at the top right of the window, although pop-up stoppers stop most of them anyway nowadays.

There used to be five people that shared this computer, my oldest step-daughter would only chat, and we used to pick up lots of stuff. Since we kicked her out, I don't get any lately. (I'll knock on kodo's head-ie wood, for good luck)or better at least. I update every three or four days, and run every thing, and am doing fine,......I think...........wobbles

Yeah, it's the definitely the just clicking "yes" without reading what's coming up on the screen. This one friend of mine totally trashes his PC's. You could give him the best system and he will screw it up in a matter of months, he's terrible. I tried to help him by giving him Adaware and Spybot and all this, but he never bothered to use them ..

  23. goldfish

win32 is the shorterned name for Windows 32-bit... so all versions of windows.

if its got a suffix like win32.Blaster then that means that its an executable virus... and it IS somthing to worry about.

    So here's a better question...

How does one go about getting FOUR trojans while asleep, when no one was using the machine, it's behind a firewall, and it has two A/V scanners operating for email?

I got hit but good last night somehow.

god these kinda posts are scary!!! (btw, thanx goldfish) so far every time Ive scanned for viruses, (Antivir, house call, spybot etc) the puter has come up clean. zone alarm works in some mysterious way i don't understand. i don't know what to block anymore, or what to let through. after the 'mad exe. chorus daemon' debacle, Ive kinda given up. there was a software thread that spoke despairingly of trying to remove win32 and i was too nervous to even ask why. I'm kinda going with the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' attitude at the mo. i feel that zone alarm and the other protective software need to make their products more user friendly. (ie. if there is software that tells you what sites these blocked addresses refer to, why isn't it included in the zone alarm product. why the guessing game?) I'm surprised to find there is a manual on windows. (read in lounge today). when i first got a puter umpteen years ago, it came with a manual. this one came with a leaflet. sorry this has kinda turned into a rant.
PS. my eternal gratitude to all you geeks that do understand and take the time and trouble to help all us 'innocents'. much aloha

That's because they were probably despirate and didn't understand what they were dealing with (and probably nobody else did either...)

As far as I know, ZA is very userfriendly.

  27. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

ZA is easy enough to operate coz it works all by itself. it gives no clue as to what or why it blocks. or what or why it doesn't. 'unknown' is their favorite word. 'more info' doesn't contain enough info. in fact i now have so many questions i need to start a software thread. (when i have time lol) aloha

That sounds more like a deliberate personal attack rather than the random crap that's out there. Most systems can be hacked if the hacker is detemined and knows what he's doing. Anybody mad at you?

Even if you like leaving the puter on overnight, there's no reason to leave the doors open. If your firewall has a lock setting that shuts off ALL ourside connections, enable that before going to sleep. ZoneAlarm can do that.

Nice. My mind immediately leaps to whoever stole my laptop. :(

I've got to reformat. I finally got the system clean, but it's not right at all. And because I'm an idiot, I deleted the IP address it changed all of my incoming and outgoing email servers to before I wrote them down.
