I'm going to be upgrading my internet connection soon. Right now it looks like i'll probably be going earthlink. The offer 3Mbps downstream and 128k upstream for $40.00 a month. The cable provider in my area is comcast. They offer a 3Mbps with 256k upstream. The other two major providers in my area are Qwest 1.5Mbp and 896k upstream for 40$ a month (which just sets up the line, your actual ISP is MSN) and AT&T which provides 3Mbps with 384k upstream for 50$. Does anybody know any thing about earthlink? Do they usually have good service? Does anybody think these other ISP are offering something better? Thanks for your input.

I'm no broadband expert, but I don't think the upload and download speeds will change from provider to provider if you are using the same cable wire.

Here in Central NJ, Comcast is offering cable for $19/mo for 6 months.

Having gone through the upgrade to cable broadband with Earthlink at a prior residence, I would recommend against it. They advertised a lower rate than the local cable co but increased their charges the next month to match. Try to resolve billing or connectivity issues and you get a lot of run around between the ISP Earthlink and local cable provider.

This is earthlink DSL not cable. The cable provider in my area is comcast and the people in my area do notice some slow down when multiple people are on comcast. My friends sometimes goes on at midnight and the service is significantly faster because not as many people are on. I'd rather have the dedicated line that is provided with DSL. Also, with DSL we don't have to install any new cable jacks and the DSL modem is free with earthlink.

    earthlink is a great company.
you cant beat them for spam blocking or extra features.
if you are sure you can get a stable connection. go with them.
i had a problem where my central office moved, and they were un able to keep providing me service. id reccomend checking how far you are from your CO at http://www.dslreports.com
    click on tests.

What do you mean by central office? What is that? I'm thoroughly interested in expanding my computer knowledge so thanks for your patients and explaining things to me. It is much appreciated. That goes for everyone who replies to this or any of my other threads.
