Some of you wonderful folks have been helping me decide what new computer will fit my budget. In discussing this with someone at work, they gave me a virtually new (as in not really used) HP 2010i monitor. However, I'm not sure how old it is, so don't know if I'll be able to use it with Windows 8 when I get my new computer. I could really use this savings if this will work. How can I find out if an HP 2010i monitor will work with Windows 8?

Thanks again for your kind advice. It is appreciated. You can see the previouse discussion about my search for a new computer at http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=282689&goto=newpost

    Thanks,

Windows 8 has two resolution requirements:

You need at least 768 vertical pixels to be able to use Metro apps at all. This means a resolution of 1024×768 or greater. Smaller resolutions will only be able to run legacy desktop applications.

You need at least 1366 horizontal pixels to be able to use Metro Snap (displaying two Metro apps on the screen at the same time). This means a resolution of 1366×768 or greater.
Your monitor seems to meet both these requirements since your monitor has a screen resolution of 1600x900.
You should also be able to connect the monitor with the interfaces your computer provides. Otherwise you'll need a conversion adapter or in the worst case another graphics card.

Thank you. I was feeling better until it occurred to me...how do I see the information to download the drivers for the monitor if the drivers are not installed on the computer to make the monitor work? It's been more years than I care to admit since I had to set up new equipment that didn't come ready to work together and I feel a little lost and ignorant. Now you know why most of us buy CPU, monitor, keyboard and mouse all together!

    Thanks again,
    Patti

Windows will install a generic monitor driver. It will make just about any monitor work. Install the HP driver only if there are special settings or buttons on the monitor that you have to have. 99% of the time --- not needed.

Thank you PapaDuke, I feel better now and you probably just saved me over $200! I just noticed it says you're from "Chicago Heights, IL (the hairy armpit of hell)". Several years ago my husband was transferred to Whiting, IN...we bought a house in Crown Point. At one point someone asked us why we came to the armpit of the world and of course the answer was because that's where they mailed the paycheck! We are now back in Alabama and glad to be home. We feel like we are in God's Country, but then this is home so I guess we are a little prejudiced.

Thanks again for all your help with this computer thing. I'm going to have to buy something as I'm still using XP and I know they're going to stop supporting it soon. We've been building a new house and trying to move and sell the old one plus all the stresses with work and taking care of my Mom. I really wasn't prepared to have to make these computer buying decisions right now. The fine folks on MajorGeeks have been a big help.

    Thanks again,
    Patti
