HP-2610 fax transmission speed too slow; how to reset? where is the bottleneck?

The MGs here seem to be able to sold almost every other challenge I've presented, so, here is one more!

I'll attempt to provide every clue I can think of...

My HP-2610 All-in-One Printer works just fine until recently. Now am am not been able to fax an online fax service. Their computers report that my fax transmission speed is coming into their service at "2400 baud - ECM on".

I have gone through all the setup options for all three speeds, Slow, Medium and Fast (9600, 14400 & 33600 baud respectively) trying each with ECM both "on" and "off." Speed is still recorded as 2400 baud, ECM on by MyFax, <--the fax service.

I send print jobs over our home network to the printer without a problem. I have Comcast phone (ISP & TV) service, have done a hard reset for the Comcast modem (pressed the recessed reset button), have tried running the HP-2610 directly to the modem, all to no avail. I see that there are 4 pins on the HP-2610's RJ-11 phone connection as well as 4 pins on the modem. I have a wire with 4 pins at each end; so, they match.

I just tried the start-up routine on the unit holding "# + 9" for a full reset. I am receiving no error messages. I checked with Comcast for any troubleshooting advice; nothing there for me besides my verifying that (as I suspected) I am not using VoIP.

I would like to find a way to get my transmission speed ~up~ to 9600 baud so that I can send faxes.

Naturally, I welcome any diagnostic, troubleshooting, and/or other repair advice.

    TIA

PS - Although I have tried the (4-pin, RJ11) connection directly to the (4-pin) modem (which makes this information irrelevant, I think), the current data route is: Comcast Cable > Comcast Modem > (4-pin) phone line to (2-pin) surge suppressor > (2-pin) phone line to splitter > phone line to HP Printer/Fax/Scanner.

First, try the off-hook dial (or whatever it's called on your printer) and see if you can hear a clear dial tone - no static. While listening to the dial tone, wiggle the 2-pin phone wire and see if doing so disconnects and/or creates static.

If this is the case, replace the 2-pin phone cord. (do not use a 4-pin RJ-11 phone cord - I tried this once on an HP Deskjet 5610 and the 4-pin would not work). If you are running the phone through a surge suppressor, disconnect the 2-pin wire from it and do a direct 2-pin connection from the fax machine to the wall jack.

If this does not solve the problem, my guess is the internal fax modem in the printer is biting the dust.

    Hope this helps. :)

Thanks gman - I'll dig out a 2-pin and try it. I have listened to the line for static (using an extension/portable phone) and at least to my ear, it's clean. I have not tried wiggling the connections (and will try that), nor a 2-pin wire...I thought that if only 2 pins were needed, the 'extra' two would just be unused. I'll try both suggestions! Thanks.

@gman863 - well, sad news. The first thing I did was dig out a 6', 2-pin cord and then I ran it from the splitter (4-pin) to the printer (also 4-pin). Then I tried the test fax at the slow, 9600 baud speed with ECM "off."

    IT WORKED!!!

I do see that that before the splitter (4-pin) is the surge suppressor, and it only has TWO pins both in and out.

So, next, I tried the Medium, then the Fast transmission speeds with ECM "on" (for a heavier load) and am having pure success!

Sad thing is I'll probably not be so inspired to shake the connections to check for noise - lol - oh, well, perhaps on another day.

    Thank you!!!

    (MG does it again)
