I have just reinstalled windows after a HDD failure.
This machine worked fine but has always been fussy getting an internet connection.
I have flashed the BIOS and put in a separate PCI card but the best I can get is limited access and I need to get the dam thing on windows update to get some of the other drives and updates.

Anyone have any ideas what I could try or how to get hold of an install disc.

What do you exactly mean ? (sorry if i don't understand )

Do you need the drivers for your inboard NIC or for an external PCI NIC ?

if you have all the drivers installed for your nic, it probably isnt the nic that is the problem. check device manager to make sure there are no errors on your nic.

    Device manager shows no errors.
All I want to do is get on to the internet so I can get on Windows update, the NIC is not at fault but somthing is and I just wont some help finding it so I can fix it.

is your router set up correctly? getting an ip address from dhcp? run an ipconfig/all from command prompt to make sure. then try to ping the default gateway. if you cant ping, try an ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew and try again. once you can ping the defaut gateway, try to ping a website like google.

My guess the router is set up as no other PC useing it has a problem.

    Hi

What Windows version and Service Pack? asking as if XP SP2 suffered in some PCs with a loss of connection and there was a patch for this, plus depending on OS their maybe a Network version of the Service Pack available for download that could be downloaded on another PC and transfered across to this.

Additions to try after you have run KingSteves advice above........

If you have a software firewall if so what one, but also disable it to check its not the cause.

In the device properties to your NIC change the setting in Device Manager > Advanced tab from Auto Detect to 10MbpsFull Duplex, and see if you ge an connection.

    Fix the TCP/IP stack
