While I hate to see anyone lose their job due to downsizing, this doesn't come as a surprise.

HP's consumer grade computers are the worst crap on the market today: Loaded with crapware and "customer experience enhancements" (read: pop up ads for extended warranties, ink, etc.), customers who go into a big box store can easily notice the difference in start-up times on a stock (crapware loaded) HP versus an Acer, Toshiba or Samsung.

Anyone remember Packard Bell about 12 years ago?

    That's where HP is heading.

I'm posting from a HPG61 laptop right now,the reason I chose this laptop over others was because it simply out specc'd others for the same price, many I have recommended to friends and family have also been HP for the exact same reason. I hope HP keep's producing quality computers at the right price ,it's global recession everyone is hurting they just have to ride the storm out.

EDIT @ Gman Mine has hardly any crapware on,saying that though the keyboard could be better quality.

It would be nice to see someone offer some solid competition to apple with some new exciting products though and HP is next in line.

I owned a packard Bell too:-D I think they're different though, the family PC that we got back then was the most ridiculously over priced piece of junk you've ever seen, wish I knew then what I know now.

I think it was about £1200 for a low to mid range computer, that just couldn't last.

    1997 IIRC.

Sorry to hear they are having to downsize.

I've been happy with HP products, although I haven't purchased any in the last three years. My last buy was a laptop for my wife, and we couldn't be happier with it. It did come with a lot of crapware, but that isn't anything hard for a lurker of this site to contend with - I just delete such as part of setting a computer up for the first time. They must have gotten worse with the junk software in the last three years, it seems.

I bought my wife a HP Pavilion 533w desktop in 2002 or 2003. That thing worked for many years flawlessly. It accepted any "upgrade" I threw at it (by upgrade I mean the cast-offs from MY custom built desktop as I upgraded IT ;) ). She used it pretty much every day for work and play. I finally retired it in 2008 when I built a new one for her. It lives still, sitting in the guest room. I fire it up now and then to keep it updated. Has never failed to boot up.

Good luck HP - hope you get it sorted out.

Agreed on this is a shame.

I love my HP Envy. My husband needed a new laptop, so I ordered him an HP about 2 months ago. It didn't take me long at all to clean the crapware off of his. I think they've gotten better about it. Honestly, they get money for it, so I have to think it somewhat offsets the price they charge consumers. I'd rather take 30 minutes with Revo and cleaning the stuff off than paying more.

Yeah I noticed that too with my neices new HP laptop when I was given it to install security apps and tidy it up, didnt really notice too much crapware as I did in the past, a few toolbars, Norton trial and a few trial games etc but nothing too bad.

While its always sad to see downsizing happening, sadly some companies need to do this at times to keep competitive, I do liek Rikky hope that HP do not skimp on quality like others have, Apple are one that I feel have in their Phones and Pods (my new gen iPod touch is no where near as good as my old 2nd gen one, its slow and power loss is scary).

I think that some companies maybe gearing up for Windows 8 as its tablet friendly and while I have not used it on a tablet yet, on a netbook and desktop its really quick, Metro is not destop friendly as it will be on a touch based machine/tablet. SO I think Apple may have a competitor in Windows 8 on tablets, I know I will be getting one as I do not like the iPad at all, while its good for some, its limited for me.
