I'm running vista. My HP Photosmart C4240 All-in-One use to be fully functional and operated without flaw. Well I ended up having to re-install windows vista for one reason or another. I installed the latest HP drivers for my all-in-one and now the scanner refuses to work. It tries, but i get a message saying the USB cord is not connected. The printer works fine so i know it is connected, but the scanner will not be detected under "scanners and cameras" in control panel. Yet, in device manager under "imaging devices" there it is. When I press the "scan" button on the All-in-One, itself, the little 1-in. lcd screen reads, "usb not connected". Can anyone give me suggestions? Please, i've been trying to figure this out for three months and I can humbly admit that I'm beaten. Thanks.:confused

I just did that. First I uninstalled everything hp related. Cleaned the registry and then I installed the whole 154 mb package and still the results are the same.

What has me troubled about the whole thing is that the LCD readout on the all in one itself will give me a "USB is not connected" message when i hit the "scan" button on the all-in-one, itself, to try to manually scan. I've bought a new usb cord and it didn't fix it. I did what you recommended several times to no avail. Any other suggestions?

if it's the printer itself giving you the error, then maybe there's something wrong with it....make sure the cable is snug (im sure it is, since you got a new cable)

saw this on hp's support page for your printer:
Critical update to Correct a PC to printer communication issue
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3300219&os=2093&lang=en

    might be what you need.

The printing aspect of the all-in-one works fine. Printing jobs are error free. Although I have tried that "critical update" for the PC to printer communication issue. It changed nothing. I've read online that I may need a shielded or shorter USB cable, to not use a USB 2.0, but rather a USB 1.0 because of the power ratings... Does any of that sound like a legitimate reason? HP is not making mention of any scanner issues with my All-in-One. I really would hate to have to re-install vista. Thanks for lending me a hand with this. BTW, I hope you and yours have an excellent Easter and weekend ;)

well, my next suggestion would be to make sure you have the latest usb drivers for your computer, since you just did a reinstall...check the manufacturers support site of your computer to see if there are any chipset drivers to update.

have you tried different usb ports?

I have tried different USB ports, sure! But I think you are right about installing the latest USB drivers for my computer. I'll be busy for the most part of the day, and will try it as soon as I get the chance. I'll let you know how it turns out. I'm pretty sure you are right. Why didn't I think of that. Anyhow, I hope it works. Once again, Thanks! for that suggestion.

    Hi

Just a quicky question, is your Vista at Service Pack 1?
In Device Manager are their any items with yellow 1 marks, if so by what?

When reinstalling Vista as thesmokingun mentions did you also re-install your chipset driver for that PC make model or motherboard type as its crucial for hardware especially usb in being id'd correctly.

as a test try another image application that uses Twain, XNView should work and once installed click File > Aquire from Camera or Scanner > Import > and choose the icon like a scanner.

Cool, I'll try that the next chance I get. I'm not at my computer right now, but as soon as I am, I'll check it out. Thanks for the input. Have a Happy Easter!

I couldn't find any drivers at the manufacturer's website for any chipsets or USB related. I did look into their Troubleshooting and followed their step-by-steps. Didn't work. I've installed the 154mb suite software for the all-in-one and everytime right before it finished installing, an error message would appear "failed instalation". Then it would automatically uninstall everything that it installed. Well...I figured I had enough of "the BS" so I used "RevoUninstaller" in huntermode and killed that process right as it was to uninstall everything. I rebooted, and PRESTO! the scanner scans! The problem really lies in, "Why does the error message keep popping up?" during installation? Thanks, I appreciate you help. I'd say it was your suggestion to find the chipset drivers that made me stumble upon the eventual fix.

I have Vista home basic w/sp1. Nothing flagged or yellow in device manager. dID MANAGE TO GET THE SCANNER TO SCAN, BUT ONLY WITH A NON-COMPLETE INSTALLATION OF THE All-in-one software suite. The install kept failing and then uninstalling what it installed. I eventually got the idea to kill the process ant the failed install message and before it began to uninstall. So I retained enough of the incomplete install to run the scanner and printer. The program you suggested to use, "XNView" was great to check the scanner with because of it's quick loading compared to "windows Photo gallery". Thanks!

I'm having exactly the same problem. It occurred after the last time I changed the ink cartridges. Copies fine, but just won't scan--USB not connected. I don't know what else to try and won't buy a new cable, since you said it didn't solve the problem. Any suggestions?
