HP CD-ROM Installation problems

    I have a Compaq Evo D300v computer and a HP computer that crashed but it still has a good CD-ROM drive that I am trying to install on another computer. when I plugged it in it reads 'New Hardware' but it's not registering it as the new CD-ROM drive. So when I got to burn a CD it says I don't have one or it doesn't read any discs. Help would be deeply appreciated.
