    Hi all

This is going to be awkward to explain and not sure if it is a hardware problem, but suspect it is. This problem seems to be intermittent, sometimes lasts for ages then other times no sign of it or just a short burst then stops. If I go into start the icons start to flicker rapidly, sometimes one and other times flashing between one and another icon and there is a chittering noise, I click on another icon that I want to access and it won't let me access it, although sometimes if I keep clicking I might gain access. Other times, but does not happen as regular as the flashing icon, a small window will open, could be a search window and the letter "a" keeps typing repeatedly across the screen, yet if I open word and try to type the letter "a" the key does not work. Other keys that do not work are the arrow keys. Anyone had a similar problem or any idea what might be wrong with it.

    Regards

    Pozzy

Could be range of things, from your preliminary description I would guess at some form of of performance issue or keyboard fault, so first open either task manager cnt, alt, del choose show processes for all users and see if there's a process that's eating a lot of memory or cpu time, keep it open then when you experience the problem look for any activity.

Go into bios and use your arrow keys to navigate the menu's, do they work? If not you need a new keyboard, my second guess is that you've spilled something on the keyboard and one or more keys are permanently pressed or intermittently functioning, this would explain your key pressing symptom and certain boxes being highlighted in rapid succession so to answer your question I have experienced these symptoms and it was coffee on the keyboard.

Post your operating system, the last date of windows update and the security software your running, plus the specifications of the computer if your wish to investigate:)

Many thanks for your reply, unfortunately I am just leaving to go back to work (I work away) and will have to wait 5 weeks until I get back home to look at this, I think you are right about the keyboard, something wrong with it, sometimes the keys work and other times they don't, the arrow keys do not work in the Bios, I know that for definite. As you said it could be something spilled on the keyboard, will try and clean that first, as for the operating system its windows XP, service pack 3, security software I initially had AVG, then deleted that and ran Avast and thats when problems started. Could it be possible I did not fully delete AVG and there was a conflict. However since then, I"ve deleted Avast and at the moment I think I am running zone alarm anti virus, with Spybot S&D and Malwarebytes. As for the laptop, it's a HP Compaq Mini 700 EA
