    I'm having a problem with a HP DV2000.

    Note
I'm aware of the infamous NVIDIA overheating problem associated with the DV2000 and this - as far as I know - was resolved following the installation of a new heat-sink. There is now no excessive heat (verified by touching the area) being generated by the GPU.

The new issue is best illustrated in the video below:

HP Pavilion DV2000 - Unusual error lights

The device powers on as normal but there is no display and - frustratingly - no POST beeps. Whilst it is not apparent in the video, the CD drive "clicks" (no disk inserted) continuously in time with the flashing hard drive status light.

    The following has been attempted:

    • CMOS battery disconnected for 10 minutes
    • Hard reset tried (15 seconds on power button with no power source)
    • Battery replaced
    • Powered-on without a battery (same behaviour)
    • Alternative hard drive tried (same behaviour)
    • Alternative power supply tried (same behaviour)
    • Internal connection to the screen itself verified
    • External monitor tried - no signal being received

The laptop is out of warranty (approximately 3 years old) and it would be cost-prohibitive to get it repaired by HP.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix it? It would be a shame to simply throw it for what may be an obvious problem.

    Thanks in advance.

    Tried replacing the RAM?

So you already had someone resolder the GPU back onto the motherboard? How long ago was this?

You have tried just about everything else other than testing the A/C Adapter, D/C Jack and RAM.

My guess is that the motherboard is bad.

Resoldering the GPU back onto the motherboard is a temporary fix in my opinion. The real problem is with the flawed motherboard layout (the GPU being so close to the CPU).

    Thanks for the replies.

I attempted replacing both the power supply and swapping the RAM from a working laptop - no change. "thisisu" is probably right so it looks like I'm breaking it up and selling the parts on eBay.

    Never buying HP again... :(
