hi guys, new problem, sold the old laptop and bought a new one, ive had it for 15 months, just my luck its out of warranty when i get the problems
anyway, its running xp home and has a Nvidia Geforce Go 6150 graphics card as standard
well all was fine till this morning when i turned it on and clicked internet explorer, it shut down immediately
i pressed the power buttion to restart and it gets just past the hp screen then onto the black screen just b4 windows loads
it stays on the black screen with the white cursor flashing in top left and doesnt go any further
i turned it off and back on and tried holding the f8 key to start in safe mode but its not doing anything
    my options are
    esc change boot order
    f10 enter setup
    a hidden option is
    f11 restore factory setup
ive tried going into setup but no options to disable anything which may be at fault
i tried the restore to see if it would get me to a diagnostics or a roll back screen but no luck
after i aborted the restore it gave me a blue screen saying 'the video driver failed to initialize' (see pic attached)
this is the one and only time i have been able to get to the blue screen, most people hate the dreaded blue screen but i would love to see it again because it gives me more info than a black one with a flashing cursor :D
if i could restart in safe i could disable the video driver but f8 doesnt work, dont know why, the blue screen recommends it, not sure if hp use a different key to reboot in safe?
other than that im stuck as what to do
if somebody could help it would be much appreciated
    cheers carl
p.s. ive just tried to get to the blue screen again to see if it was the dsame, and for some reason it went onto the restore part, i shut it down before it started but now when i restart it i get this message
    'ntldr is missing'
    'press ctrl+alt+del to restart'
    _(flashing)
    have i killed it?
    i hope not
    :(

    update:
ive been looking round on missing ntldr
im getting worried because i think i may have lost my work for the last 5 years so im frantically looking round for stuff
i found this one which seemed to be the one i needed
    http://tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrismissing.htm
ive followed the instructions on how to replace the ntldr by using a usb pen drive, now its back to the other position but it keeps shutting down, i hope somebody can help me
sorry for appearing to bump the topic but im just letting you know what ive done
i like to try stuff but i think it would be easier for the experts if they know exactly what ive done to get to where i am now,
i need sleep so im finished for the night

Heres what i would do at this point, you can get a adapter that go's from laptop hd to a ide cable on a desk top, i would connect your laptop hd to a desktop pc and try to get your info back, you cant get into windows on the hd but you should be able to get to your files. Hope this helps. ed

Short Answer: the windows hard drive driver may have been corrupted.

Long Answer: For what it's worth, I recently had this problem. Rewriting the MBR didn't seem to help. I was working on a Dell that had a serial ATA Seagate hard-drive. Trying to run the XP CD also failed. Finally, I was able to download the SATA hard-drive driver (from Dell's website) and loaded it on a floppy. When the XP-install CD loads drivers, it asks if you have an independent hard drive driver. In my case, inserting the floppy driver here did the trick.
