HP DVD drives took off for the Holidays.

Last week my HP DVD drive's auto update program downloaded the latest firmware from the HP website. After the updates, neither drive is functional. The BIOS sees them and the Device Manager sees them. The Device Manager indicates there is a problem with both drives.

I have uninstalled both drives multiple times and reinstalled. Each time Windows tells me there is a problem with the new found hardware. Windows XP is up to date. The drives worked fine before the firmware update.

I tried to load the old firmware but the program says there are no HP drives in the system.

Any suggestions??

Problem resolved.

I went to HP's website and searched their hp.com/support FAQs and found that I wasn't the only person with this problem. I was required to deinstall some software that came with the update and edit my Registry to remove some "filters." After I followed the step-by-step instructions on the website, the drives reappeared and are working fine.

The moral of this story is, "If it isn't broken; don't fix it." HP Tech support helped me with editing the Registry and said never update the drive firmware if it is working the way it is suppose to.

 

That why I don't like auto update anything.
