HP dvd1040 Lightscribe dvd-writer problems.

I've been using my HP dvd1040 for a while now with no problems. All of a sudden when I am trying to burn something with nero 8, It goes through the motions, then says that burning failed for some reason. Then I tried to uninstall and reinstall the dvd writer to see if that would help, and now i can't seem to get it to read any disc i put in there. It's only listed as a Dvd RW drive on the computer thingy, though i think it had another name at one time. Any ideas on how to get my device working again? I dunno where the disc is, if it even came with one.

 

Bad media would be my guess. Go out and get some new dvd's BTW, how much have you used it, and how old is the drive? It could just be showing its age, since now days these things do not usually last more than two years with heavy burning, unlike the older SCSI, PATA & MFM drives that would last forever.

 

It's a long shot, but you might also try hitting HP's support/download website and check if any firmware updates are available for your drive.

If neither this nor brownizs' tip about trying different discs works, it's time to replace it. I'd go with either an ASUS or Pioneer burner; my experience has been they last the longest.

I'll give a different type of media a try, and then get a anew burner if there isn't any firmware for it. thanks though for the suggestions. I just hope i don't have to. lol

 

Most of the firmware out there is to region unlock, nothing else. I went through two dvd1040's, before I got one that actually works right, along with swapping out the 40pin with a good 80pin PATA cable. Now, if you have SATA ports, you could just get a good SATA burner.
