HP dvd1170 Writer won't burn DVDs

I just purchased a brand new HP dvd1170 Writer and it won't burn DVDs. I've tried both DVD-R and DVD+R and neither one works. The program I'm using (ImTOO DVD Creator) acts like it's working as usual, but it finishes up much faster than it should, and then the DVD shows up as blank.

Is there some other type of disc I need to be using, or is this burner a dud?

Note: I've been burning DVDs just fine with my old SONY DRX-840U, but as soon as I hooked up this new one, I haven't been able to burn a single thing.

Any help would be much appreciated.

 

Can you post system specs, including PSU?

I Have never heard of that burning programme, did it come with the PC?

Download and run InfraRecorder, this is a well known programme, used by many that works 99.9% of the time. This should tell if the Burner is to fault.

May i ask what you are trying to burn?

 

Also if you're running Vista or Win 7 try burning some files right from Windows Explorer (aka the File Manager).

ImTOO DVD Creator didn't come with my PC. I just found it with a Google search. I had never burned movies before and I needed something that was inexpensive and very easy to use. Here's a link to it: ImTOO DVD Creator

I'm trying to burn movies (that are in .avi format) so I can watch them on my TV / DVD player.

I've downloaded InfraRecorder. Going to install it now and give it a try.

I just tried that (with a DVD-R disc) and it worked fine. So it seems I can burn files to disc, but I just can't burn movies.

 

I’m not sure if I’m doing something wrong in InfraRecorder. :confused It’s very different from the program I’ve been using.

I run InfraRecorder and select “Video Disc”

I then add my file (it's a TV series episode in .avi format) to the project and select Actions > Burn Compilation > to a Compact Disc
(Is this wrong, since it’s a DVD and not a CD? I don’t see an option for DVD…)

In the window that pops up (in the “General” tab) I select my HP DVD Writer and change “Write speed” to 5.2x
I don’t know what “Write method” is, so I didn’t touch that. Just left it on the default, which is: Session-At-Once (SAO)

I then click the box to “Eject the disc after writing” and click “OK”

Another window pops up and immediately tells me “Status: Operation failed”

 

Try using DVDFlick.

Yes, thanks. I'm very relieved that's all it was, and not a problem with the burner. I wasn't looking forward to the hassle of returning it, and I probably would have had the same problem again with another new one.
