hp dvd200i problem

First off hello to all and happy new year. Now on to my question. Recently a friend gave me his two year old hp dvd writer dvd 200i. He bought a new computer with a burner and didn't need two. He told me that it worked fine. I bought a hp install disk because he lost his. So I installed the device on a pc with XP Pro sp2. I ran the install disk and updated the firm ware. It plays every dvd that I have put in it without problem. The problem is that I have some videos on my hard drive that I want to convert to dvd and I cannot do it. I have been trying to use Fuji film DVD-R 4.7 GB disks.
Using CD Burner XP Pro I get “Critical No media in the selected device. Please insert a record able media and try again. Of note is that when I put a CD-R 70 minute in the device it recognizes it as being to small.
Arc Soft Showbiz tells me that “The device is not ready. Please check on the device.”.
Sonic MyDVD will show me the preview with no errors. When I try to burn the DVD it starts checking media and then tells me “Unknown device error check on device. Time out.”.
I have checked all of the connections. Any ideas or suggestions?

 

The 200i may not support DVD-r media.
Try different Media, Like some in the +r flavor

You may sometimes have to try several brands also.

Once you find a compatible and reliable brand, stay with it.

Not all media brands work in all drives, especially some older ones.

 

The DVD+R did the trick. I had bought the DVD-R discs on sale before I got the CD. Now that I look at the instructions it does say DVR+R, doh. Thanks again.
