HP F440 Printer -Error Message w/Scan Option

    I have a new HP F440 printer. It has been printing fine. Today I tried to scan a document for the first time and save, no luck! I keep getting 'unknown error'....I am using a new iMac also. I am a novice when it comes to trouble shooting software issues....please help if you can....
