    Hello!

I was pointed to this forum by plodr from the thread I made over in software. I believe we may have ruled out a software problem with my HP dv7-4177nr and would greatly appreciate any advice or assistance that could be offered.

Here is a link to the original thread: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1867455

To summarize the issue I'm getting very bad hanging/stuttering while using the laptop. It was mostly with games, video, and audio but now is effecting nearly everything. I explain it in more detail inside my original post.

Also as I outlined in the thread I've checked temperatures and even dissembled and cleaned out what little dust and debris was inside the laptop (which was very little). I forgot to mention that the CPU and graphics idle around the 55c-60c and go up to just under 70 without any extra cooling while gaming (mostly Minecraft and World of Warcraft). The HDD is usually around 40c-50c, mostly staying in between those two temperatures. I've reinstalled Windows, I've installed all Windows updates and the latest drivers I could find. The problem persists even with all startup items and non-Windows services disabled. I've also ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool and it came back showing no errors. I also have defragged the HDD (I believe it's scheduled to do it at least once a week). I don't really know where to go from here or what else to do. As I said, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

Hi my friend , welcome to MG's :major

    You have to download this

    http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

burning it to a cd/dvd using this programme

checking the memory Ram using the memtest86 ( running each module for 5 hours at least ) , my second thought is that hdd is probably faulty , go to Start - Computer - right click to hdd drive - choosing Hardware tab , now you can inform us about the manufacturer of your hdd :wave

I'll need some time to burn the boot disk. This laptop has a Bluray/DVD burner combo but the drive stopped working about a month or so ago while making backups. It shows up in windows and otherwise looks fine but when I put a disk in it acts like the drive is still empty. Seen a lot of information online about them going bad. I can use my desktop to burn it but I don't have access to it right now.

As for the HDD, it's a Toshiba MK6461GSYN, listed as an ATA device if that makes any difference.

I could not get the HDD diagnostic tool to run a test. I presented me with a list of drives (the HDD being the only one there) and when I tried to run either test it told me I needed to select a drive first. The problem was no matter what I did it would not select it. I tried to google it and found I was not the only one with this problem however there were no solutions. I ran chkdisk but I have no idea what the results were since the computer booted into Windows before I had a chance to see.

I also ran the Memtest from the bootable USB drive as you suggested. I checked it every now and then as it ran and it had no errors found. Eventually I went to sleep and when I woke up the computer had shut down... I have no idea if it did find anything or not or if that is normal but the last I looked at it was just before going to bed and it had been running for at least 4 hours with no errors found.
