HP Laptop Key Help!!

Not for sure if its something that was pushed or corrupt driver.... etc. I have a HP Pavilion dv7-6163us. Everytime I type a key it puts 72 on the screen, like if I hit a, it displays a72 on the screen, any help would be great

 

Have you tried doing a system restore to a time that was before this issue started ??

 

more up dated info the few letters we pushed it was rolling out those numbers, I think there is a short, in that grouping of letters a to y area of keyboard it will jump to home or turn on caps lock, and sometimes not at all but a lot of time its jumping around doing weird stuff, I work in a machine shop so im guessing some little piece of metal could have got in there

 

It may be that something has been spilt on the keyboard, or if the laptop is move around alot the keyboard cable may have been dislodged, I have located a service manual for your laptop so as you can then take the keyboard out and check cabling/connections if you have any compressed air (with you working in a machine shop) give the laptop a good blowing out.

I'll just add that replacement keyboards for that model are very reasonable (under $25). When laptop keyboards are that reasonable my recommendation is just wait take it apart one time and replace it and be done with it. From the comments at that Amazon link it is fairly simple. Dealing with the ribbon cable and connectors is always tricky because they are so fragile but still not that bad, just be careful.

You can try an external USB keyboard to verify that your internal keyboard is the problem. But buying an external USB keyboard (if you don't have one around) will cost you not much less than getting a new internal one.
