HP Laptop not recognizing router

I shut down my laptop last night, because I needed to restart it. And when I turned it on today, it didn't automatically connect to the router has it always does.
I normally don't shut down my laptop.
I don't know what the problem could be. The internet works on the desktop tho.
Any suggestions to what I could do? Thank you.

I am thinking most likely you connect via wireless to your router.

Is your other computer hard wired into the network or connecting wireless?
If both are hard wired - check cables for tightness - swap the laptop's cable for the known working cable.

If you are connecting wireless:
I would recommend re-booting the modem and router.
If you have a separate modem and router - please turn off or unplug - if no switch - the modem first, then the router.

If they are built together - such as a 2wire - just switch off - or unplug it, leave it off for aprox. 10 seconds - maybe more if you have done this once before.


You did not specify your OS - Windows XP, or Vista.
That is helpful info - makes these recommendations easier.
If the above steps did not work please try the steps below.


Please try right clicking on your Internet connections in your Task bar at bottom right - on XP, I believe it is "View Network Connections"
on Vista - "Choose connect to a Network".
From there choose to disconnect - if it shows you connected - or choose
connect - being sure to choose your network if more than one is displayed.

If your network requires a password / passphrase enter that and try the connection.
