I don't know if anyone can help me with this problem. Last night my laptop just froze and I couldn't do anything with it other than turn it off. Then it wouldn't turn back on. When I pressed the power button the lights would flash twice and then turn off.

After trying for a while, I removed the battery, disconnected the power and held the power button for around 30 seconds. I reconnected the power and battery and it turned on. However, today it keeps doing it. I have had to do this process about 4 times today, it just keeps freezing and then it won't turn back on.

    Any ideas????

Actually, I don't need to take the battery out and hold the power button for 30 seconds, I just need to leave it for about 5 to 10 minutes and then it will turn on. Does it sound like an overheating problem?

It would help if you gave us a make and model# of the laptop.

It's a HP DV6 I think. I am now thinking it might be a problem with a game. The kids are playing Minecraft on it and it only seems to crash during that game. Although they have played the game for a couple of months and it has just started doing this over the last couple of days.

By any chance would that laptop be an HP DV6000, if so, then that series of laptop has known video chip problems as well as overheating problems.

You could try using a can of compressed air and blowing any dust out of the vents.

Not sure, it just says HP Pavilion dv6

I will try blowing dust out and see how I go. It's weird though that it only seems to happen with the Minecraft game so I'm really not sure if it's a computer problem or a problem with that game.

Puppywunder58 's suggestion of cleaning with compressed air could be the answer.
When a Laptop keeps cutting off, like that it is very likely because of overheating.
I have often seen a thick wad of hair/fluff between the fan/filter, and the cpu. This is especially possible when you have cats, dog in the house, or, if the Laptop is used a lot on the carpet.

It certainly sounds like it is overheating, just the fact that if I turn it off for 10 minutes it will work again. It's just frozen again now and no-one was playing any games, I just had a Nortons scan running and my browser open and it froze.

I might take it in somewhere to get it looked at.

    Thanks

I'm also having this problem with the exact same computer and the game. but whether that is the trigger is debatable as mine has also frozen during other high performance programs or just many processes. What should I do?

To anyone with this problem, -if you google , you will find various videochip repair videos on youtube, as these did have a problem as Puppywunder58 said earlier with the video chip.
Sometimes you can just put pressure to the right of the mousepad, and you might get it to work.
I will come back, as I have done something on this problem previously, and I will try to refer you to it.
