HP Laserjet just stopped printing with Vista HP desktop...what gives?

So Im visting my Pop in New Hampshire and his 1 year old HP laserjet p1006 just stopped printing, I did a test print from a few different programs and nothing, he did have a system crash around the same time, but has the computer working fine now, it about a 3 year old HP desktop

the only error message you get is in the print preview screen it has "error" for status, I looked up his printer driver it had no driver, so I updated his driver thru the "find newest drivers" and now its showing some driver files in the printer control panel, and now under printer que it says "printing" for status but nothing
I beleive the cord is good and the printer is not broken
any suggestions as to what it could be?
