HP LJ2100 / USB Problem

The HP LJ 2100 only has a Parallel port and my Laptop doesn't.

I tried running it through a D-Link DP 300-U printer server and all went well for a while. No modification was made to the computer when out of the blue it started churning out pages of one liners of gibberish.
Stopped, re-installed etc several times and it would work for a short while before starting to churn out pages with a single line of gibbersih/hieroglyphes.

Next I bought a Centronics to USB cable. Again all worked well until this time it just stopped. After several attempts at unplugging the LJ2100 for a while from power and USB it will work for a while until next time it decides to stop.

Does anyone know whether there is software or a bit of hardware that can get my LJ to work normally through USB or Ethernet?
