    Hi all. I'm trying to install printer software/drivers for my neighbors' new printer, but it
    won't install. I'm somewhat pc literate and work on a quite a few, but, bear in mind, please
    don't get too techie with me. I can follow directions pretty well tho.

    When setup gets started installing Part 1/4 it suddenly stops and throws this message:

    Installation Error
    Call to DriverPackageInstall returned error 32 for package 'C\HP\HP OfficejetPro8610
    \DriverStore\Yeti\hpvyt13.inf': A componet of the driver package in the DIFx driverstore is
    locked by a thread or process.

    When it does this, it puts the following 3 folders in Windows Explorer:
    {75e99df5-4766-4e99-ba10-241975351a1b3}
    {411d54fa-0ca8-4106-bb96-34a5cf6eca51}
    {fd0b22e8-0cad-4155-947a-fbb2020cf0d0}
    All 3 of these folders have the hpvyt13.inf file mentioned in the Installation Error above,
    with a date modified of 3/2/2014!!!! Why would the date be modified 2 yrs. ago? Maybe
    they've had another HP printer installed on this laptop?

    I've searched the web for a solution, but no luck so far. I've run all the malware scans
    with the programs listed below, and the machine is clean. Tried installing with Windows
    firewall and Avast antivirus turned off, Windows services stopped, except for Windows
    Installer and Print Spooler--still a no-go.

    Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. If you need more info, I'll gladly supply it--I
    wanna get this thing fixed. Shouldn't be this hard to just install a printer.

    HP Officejet Pro 8610 All-In-One
    Dell XPS M1530
    Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2
    Avast Free (program and definitions up to date)
    all MS updates are current
    Malware scanners, etc. I've run:
    Malwarebytes
    Spybot S&D
    SuperAntiSpyware
    AdwCleaner
    CCleaner

    Have another look at the installation instructions.
    Do you have to install the drivers and then connect the printer, or connect the printer and then install the drivers?
    In either case, must the printer be turned on? If not, when do you turn on the printer?

    Eldon, I don't have the manual with me, but during software installation it says to Power On, Connect (it's connected to my Wi-Fi), and make sure paper and ink are loaded, then install the software. All those conditions are met.

    empty_pockets,
    I suggest you download the manual. And then follow the installation instructions word for word. The manufacturers all have their own ideas of how to install hardware.

    The manuals don't tell how to install the software--just how to use the printer once it is installed. I did, however, find a video at hp.com that shows how to install, and I've done that exactly.

    I'd delete temp and/or where ever the HP program extracted to. Use 7zip or WinRAR, right click on the driver and extract.
    In Windows select add a printer and point to the extracted files. Are you installing the suite or just a printer driver?

    Hey, thanks everybody for your suggestions.

    foogoo, setup doesn't extract files to anywhere I can see. The setup screen just says if the printer is on, loaded with paper and ink, and is connected to Wi-Fi, it's ready to install. The only choices to install or not are listed below, and I tried to install with all 5 delselected, then with all 5 selected--no go.
    Product Improvement Study (don't need that, for sure)
    I.R.I.S OCR (they'll never use this)
    HP Smart Print (when it runs out of ink, they'll know it)
    HP Update (don't need anymore services bogging this old hog down even more)
    HP Officejet Pro 8610 Help (they have the owner's manual if they need help, and can read. lol)
    I uninstalled and deleted everything HP, rebooted, and tried again--still a no go. Right now I'm trying to install just ANYTHING.

    mekanic, I've tried both ways--neither works

    Eldon, I visited that link the other day and followed all the steps there--you guessed it--no go.

    I already know how to fix this issue, but wasn't ready to do a System Recovery just yet. However, methinks it might be the way to go now to avoid possible problems down the line. I snooped around and found remnants of 2 other HP printer models installs, and 1 Epson. I think the old heifer is so confused that she doesn't know what to do. lol

    OK everybody. I "fixed" it. System Recovery made the difference. Thanks to all for your help. I guess I can't mark this post as "Solved" tho.
