Hi, I think this is the model # but will correct it later if it's not. This is an HP all in one and the printing and fax work fine, the scanner did but does not now, and the card reader in the unit will not work, but the wierdest thing is the usb ports on the computer will not work when the printer is plugged in. In order to use the usb ports on the computer, we have to unplug the usb to the printer. The computer is a Dell Win XP, and this has continued through a clean install of Win XP, we replaced the hard drive due to failure. Has anyone had this problem?
    thanks jonesy82100

I would say that there's a power problem with the printer/scanner. Obviously, it has issues if the scanner no longer works and if the media reader no longer works. New all-in-one units w/o fax ability can be found for under $50 on sale these days. Personally, I'd retire the dying unit to fax-only usage and by a new unit for everything else. If the malfunctioning unit is knocking out the PC's USB ports, it may be a matter time before it does permanent damage to the PC (this is possible due to the live voltage that runs thru USB ports; this is why iPods can blow-out USB ports, and why it is strongly recommended to use the "safely remove USB device" feature in WinXP).

thanks, I'm sure that's what we'll do, just found this curious and wondered if this was unique or if others had this happen.

If you open up the USB port that the printer/scanner is on (in device manager) you should see how many mAmps. The entire mAmps is divided among all the USB ports. If the printer/scanner is using too many, there is nothing for the other ports.
One workaround, is to buy a USB powered hub. Plug that into a USB port. The hub supplies it's own power so it isn't stealing from the computer. Plug the printer/scanner into the powered hub and probably all you other ports will work.

As far as the scanner, I've had windows updates kill my scanner's ability to scan. I know the scanner still works. I moved it to a computer that has never been on the internet (in windows) so has had no windows updates since the day it was purchased. I installed the scanner on it and it works perfectly. We keep that old computer in the basement with the scanner and an old working printer attached and only fire it up when we need to scan things.

I also have problems with the scanning feature of the L7580. I am on Microsoft Windows XP. I had the problem when I first purchased the device. However, after hours and hours dealing with the HP support personnel, they finally got it to work. I am not sure what all they did but I do know that they deleted certain files from my computer after uninstalling and before reinstalling. I now have the same problem because I purchased a new computer and tried to install the software on the new computer. My new computer also is operating under Microsoft Windows XP. I have uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times with no affect. I was wondering if someone else knows which files must be deleted before reinstalling the software. I hate to delete something that is going to screw me up.

    Thanks.
