    Hello,

I have a HP a6200n Desktop (see link to specs) http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/e...3158-12133158-12133158-80626463-81048011.html

3-4 Mths. ago, this PC (I assume) was hit by heat and/or power serge as it lost (fried) 1gb ram chip, lost RED primary color in monitor, and the HD is very unstable.

I ordered 2 new 1gb ram chips, 2 of the 4 ram "slots" are dead. 2 work, I formatted the HD and ordered new Vista recovery software from HP (as old one was corrupt).. Once all items came in I reinstalled Vista with many issues of freezing up, hanging hour glasses, restarts (crashes) and many attempts to retry installation.

Finally, I was able to get everything to start and reach a desktop only to hang up in "please don't restart during this initial setup" This would run 16hrs and never stop. I went to MSCNFIG and unchecked "fullscreen" & "Blocktracker" in the startup menu and this resulved the hang up page issue. I then was able to sucsesfuly start, restart, and play in the desktop with no errors or crashes.

At this time I decided to add sp1 (windows updates) as there was no sp on the CD. I got through the first 75 updates with no issues and all the sudden, BLUE SCREEN "IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_TO" error msg and ran the dump reports. It then rebooted itself and 1 LONG CONTENTIOUS BEEP noise came on. Nothing on the monitor as well. I then reboot and it would get to the "GREEN BAR" loading windows bar black screen and the "GREEN BAR" would freeze up. I restated many times only to get similar to same errors and freezing.

I turned off the PC and took off the panel and re-seated all re-seatable items on the Mother-Board. Turned it on and same issue. I was able to boot to SAFE MODE after a few attempts (nothing I could really do there at this point). I then ran a start-up boot repair in Format/Repair. This simply ran for 9hrs and never did anything.

I then reinstalled the CD once more. Same issue with hang ups and retries. Finlay I was able to get to registration and a Vista desktop. I started the sp1 updates and this time it failed (crashed) in the 5th update. I did ran a ck/dsk and it found some items also it added entry's for 5-6 mins.. "Inserting and index entry with ID xxxx into Index $SII of file 9" It ended in adding 14956

It then rebooted and was able to get to desk top and run some "Hardware Tool" checks. everything would ren good for a min then I get the BLUE SCREEN again. Please note, Prior to the new installs I did over the weekend I was able to successfully complete some Hardware test.. Mother board said ok, Ram said ok, HD said ok, etc..

At this point, I have no ideas. Once ya think it's all good it reboots, freezes or Blue Screens.

    Any Ideas?

    Thanks in advance

    Conclusion
3 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. A third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

    ntkrpamp.exe

If no updates for these drivers are available, try searching with Google on the names of these drivers in combination the errors that have been reported for these drivers and include the brand and model name of your computer as well in the query. This often yields interesting results from discussions from users who have been experiencing similar problems.

Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is actually responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

This is old but since you are back to pre-sp1 and have limited memory (although 2gb isn't particularly small) but you are getting the error mentioned.

The download for the hotfix is directly under the title, a bit easy to miss.

    *****
If you haven't yet done so then I would run the extended version of the HD manufacturer's diagnostic to see if it finds any problems with the HD. Might be worth going through a low-level/write zero to the drive if this particular Vista install seems unrepairable before trying a new install on the same HD.

Since I un-installed the Virus program it loads a little better with 1/4 of the crashing stopped (still crashes alot) nevertheless, I was doing SP1 updates and this seriously was super hard so I downloaded sp1 full and am trying to run it now yet keep getting this freeze up in black screen.. !! OXco190036 !! 5523/77933 (solitaire.exe) If I can get this to stop and get bank into Windows I will do the hotfix :confused Thank You

The hotfix addresses a low memory problem that results in the UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP error. Between your memory slot problem and getting the exact error I would try the hotfix. The particular file mentioned (ntkrpamp.exe) may not be the actual cause of the error but something about the way memory is being used and going to low could be causing the error.

I'm guessing the hotfix is included in SP1 or SP2 so if that installs you may not need it.

    Hey Superlost,

I'm sorry I am not feeling well tonight so I am not up to searching error codes. I still recommend running the HD manufacturer's diagnostic utility to rule out HD problems. http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 Run the extended test and maybe use the Write Zeros or Low Level format option to clean up the HD before installing Vista.

You can try using the Vista installation disc and on the Install splash screen use the Repair option (down on the right hand side) to try and fix the bootmgr problem. The automatic repair may not fix the problem but after it completes if you hit the Next button you can then select the manual Startup Repair from the list of five options to see if that fixes the problem.

I'll re-read tomorrow to see if I can be of any help in this thread but I am unsure I will be.

:confusedafter many attempts, I was able to do a repair start up scan (ran all night long) it finished after 8.5 hrs. It did the boot mgr fix. However, when windows started for the first time came up, the installation did not take so it instructed me to load CD 1 and restart to do install over. I did that 18 times (it hangs up at any giving time)...

Finally I was able to get it to install part 1 of 3 100% perfect, the PC then asked me to hit Finish to reboot (that starts the file transfer part) it transfers fine for a good while then "BLUE SCREEN" pops up and kills the install..

So back to square 1 with boot mgr error.. I then had to F11 ten times to get to repair start up, it's running fine now in that mode.

However, once the repair finishes we need to keep in mind that the "install" did not take so were going to be back at square 2 (reformatting and installing) only to fail. It's a continues no win issue..

Since there is no windows loaded there is no way to run any test. When windows was loaded it crashed as soon as you clicked on anything. I think I have the issues figured out and how to start to fix (Once we get in Windows) until then I have no idea how to approach the install (FYI: there is no back up point)..

Ok, (I hate this) It got to creating desktop, windows loaded, Keep in mind I never got the Vista Install to transfer files 100% However, it loaded and the fisr msg that came up was "User Profile Was Not Loaded Correctly" (had me as a temp user named CPC/PC ) The msg continued to say "Any Changes Made will be lost under this Profile upon reboot)

I tried renaming CPC/PC to the name ELVIS however it made the name change yet same status.. Seems like 1/2 the programsa are not in "Programs' and I tried to update and just reboots..

    I am lost

Stop error 0A points to using 3GB or more of RAM and this doesn't apply to you because you only have 2GB in there.

I know it says software and drivers at your first few crash dumps but if it were me, I'd find another hard drive and see if Vista will install correctly.

Yes, I agree you have to take a possibly bad HD out of the picture. Try an install on any old HD or do the low-level format. A low level format only takes an hour or so and you are spending much more time than that on the bad installs.

Once more, I reformated this time taking out 1 stick of RAM as RAM was the very first issue with this PC. The system (when working) runs much better and less to no crashes. The install is running now in the stage 2 of 3 part of the instalation (transfering/copying files)..

It poped up a "can't write memory error" It happened so fast I did not get a good look at the error code..lt then (and still is) continueding with the transfercopying of the files. I don't want to speake to soon however, by removing the stick of RAM it has gone further in the install then it EVER has....

FYI Both sticks of 1GB RAM are good. I have used them both 1 at a time and problems seem to happen when you run both. Nevertheless the "can't write memory error" leads me tobelive that IF this installs VISTA there will be issues. (don't you love my positiveity)....

I will keep posting the progress
    THANK YOU

The "File Transfer" step is still running (see image) since 14:00 or (2:00pm) it's 3:45 now and it's still transferring. Is this normal? :confused

Well it finished loading, then boot mgr error comes up after refresh. So I am doing the reboot repair one more time. If this does not work, I am going to trade the PC for a 1/2 doz jelly donuts and be done.. :yum :yum

That a generous baker's half dozen. You got a good deal! :)

You might try and install a version of Linux on that HD. Maybe Linux Mint. The installation should put the same stresses on the machine. If it fails then you know there is something wrong with the machine itself rather than just trying to run Vista on it.

Whats strange is, the PC will load XP Pro (as I am installing now) It ran XP Pro just fine. When the new factory sealed Vista came in from HP it goes WACKOO.. Basically it does the same as the old software did (thats why I ordered new one from HP)..

It's not the software, I guess Vista is to much strain for this. I would love to fix the memory slot issue as I feel this is causing the entire issue..

PS I got 8 donuts (2 for you!)... Let's see if XP Pro goes back on ok
    Thanks!

What baffles me is the fact this system is running more less flawless with XP Pro. However, it takes 3 days and 23 attempts to install vista (unsuccessfully)....

Any thoughts on this ? (I can rule our corrupt software as I have 2 copies & 1 is brand new just taken out of pack)...

Once I get the XP Pro updated and going smooth I will do the Long Test on Hard Drive

I tried to download this to a usb stick, its just a little bigger then the USB stick so it failed to download. I copyed it to a cd and the XP will not open the CD. It just spins the hour glass.. Is there a smaller driver I can use?

I downloaded your service pack 3 link, I ran it and got this error.

Your system does not meet the minimum requirements for this update. Update has been cancelled (9998).

As to the device mgr, yes there are 2 "yellow" marks in the Device Mgr. (see image below)

I have only downloaded a few items (Flash,Firefox, and the driver pack you gave me)..

The system runs GREAT until I download a anti-virus program and then it crashed bad. I uninstalled AVG 12 and it ran perfect. Maybe since this is so early of install w/ SP2 and AVG 12 is to advanced for this???? :confused

    Thanks!

I am almost positive your computer has an AMD Processor. Click start and then right click My Computer, Select properties. Does it say AMD or Intel processor?

I am pretty sure one of the devices is the modem. Can you right click both with the question mark, Select Properties and then the Driver Tab. Post the Vendor and device ID.

Ok, I have achieved what I was told to do in the early parts of this post (yet PC would not let me) That was to run a full deep scan of HD w/seagate

I updated just enough to install .Net Framework 4.0 so "Seagate" could run..

The test "Failed" I have no idea what "failed" means in this program. Is this 290+ failed items fixable? :wave

I think Seatools was looking for an SD card in the card reader if your computer has one. I would not worry about that. Did you do the check of your hard drive?

Were you able to install the drivers?

I was able to do drivers update (except the modem and will do that in a bit.)

As to "Did I check Hard Drive?" I thought I was lol with seagate however you say it looked for something else.. Is there a good tool to check the Drive?

First run Seatool for Windows again and have it look for the hard drive. There should be a Windows with the hard drive and it's size. It should be listed as PATA/SATA. Check the box next to it and then test.

If that does not work then try Seatools for DOS. You can download the iso file and burn with Imgburn or Nero. Boot the CD and then check the drive. There is also a pdf guide you might want to look at on the same page as the download.

I remembered that I wanted to ask a question about your ram. Are both sticks in the same colored slots of the motherboard?

    I have 4 slots, 2 blue & 2 black..

I have 2 sticks of Ram (1gb each) both work...

There is only 1 stick in the first blue slot. (If I put the other stick in the 2nd blue slot the PC will not load anything. (just a black screen) remove 1 stick and it works fine..

I tried 1 stick in blue slot and 1 stick in black slot and that worked ok it seemed like..

As of now, there is 1 stick only in the blue slot (However, I am now going to add 1 more stick in black slot and test)

As for seatools, it does not seem to find my hard drive at all... here is what it finds (see image below)...

As for Seatools DOS I can try to download an ISO do you know an easy one (Im not good with them) Better yet, is there another HD test tool?
    Thanks for the assistance

Some software I know of that will check hard drives is UBCD which is another iso file that needs to be burned but is a lot bigger in download size.

    And HDDscan

You can also download at Majorgeeks but I did not have much luck with v3.3

Another thing about the ram. You have dual-channel memory. Both colored slots should be filled in order to get the advantages of Dual Channel. Is there a dual-channel setting in bios?

Edit: I cannot find a manual for that motherboard.

I have no idea how to read the scan results.. I figured out how to so a SMART scan.. Trying to figure out the rest...

When I placed Ram Stick # 2 in ANY slot the PC does not work.

I would say your hard drive looks okay. Maybe the ram stick is defective. I am not sure about something. You have two ram sticks and it worked with one in black and one in blue. But you just stated that ramstick #2 does not work in any slot.

Your correct, I did say that However,.....

I stated I was going to install Stick # 2 (while stick # 1 was in as well) and I did, The PC would freeze up after reboot when I installed Stick # 2 in any of the 3 open spots.

So, No the # 2 ram stick will ONLY WORK if I "Swap" it with stick # 1

    1. If I put stick # 1 in 1st blue spot (all works great)
    2 If I "Swap" Stick # 2 with stick # 1 (all works great)
3 If I install both sticks PC does not work

This is by far an issue!

PS I think (if memory serves) that on the "Old" install of XP Pro I ran PC with stick in blue and stick in black slot. I could be wrong,
