HP Pavilion a6750y

Working on a friend's pc. It's an HP Pavilion a6750y. On power up, the fans start running, cd drives spin up, harddrve, etc. Then cpu fan stops (within 1 sec) No beep or post sounds.

Have a 2nd MOBO, and get the same result. Tested PS, and it appears fine. Tried a spare I had anyway, but no luck, same sympotoms.

Thought it might need to have processor reseated. reseated, cleaned off old thermal paste and reapplied new. No luck.

Also tried a minumum config. 1 stick of memory, unplugged dvd drive, hdd as well. Same symptom.

I find it hard to believe I have 2 bad MOBOs. Tried resetting CMOS as well, no luck.

Any suggestions?

If you have a spare PSU sitting around, it's worth a shot hooking it up to see if it solves the problem.

 

I did try another PS and got the same result. I did have some progress by unplugging the power, holding the power button for 5 secs. then turning it on. Was able to boot. Planning on trying to update the BIOS now that I have a way to power it up. Very strange to have to do that every time.

Just a thought: Are you saying that you can not get the comp to try to come up after the shutdown and have to unplug the power to get another shot at it? If you are that's another symptom/clue. PSU has over current and over\under voltage protection. Either fault shuts the PSU down and you must remove the AC input to reset it. Maybe?
