I have a hp pavilion dv 5000. The hard drive crashed and had to be replaced. i ordered recovery disks from hp and the OS installed fine. Now I'm trying to load the dirvers and utilities. The disk they send dosen't have anything I can use. I've down loaded most everything from the web site except a SM Bus device driver and an unknown device. Any ideas on what I should do about these devices?

Yes, it turns out that there are so many slightly different models that HP is not all that sure which are which. At any rate I found the SM bus device driver on the Intel web site and the unknown device turned out to be the HP quick launch buttons.

Thank you for taking time to assist me on this topic.

Hi kirk48, I've got the same HP laptop (dv5000) and had a bit of rough time with drivers and everything after a complete reinstall of windows XP (without the recovery discs I mean)... Everything works just fine now except for the quicklaunch buttons. I don't seam to get them running. Did find a driver update for quicklaunch but the buttons still don't work. I got the idea of your message posted above that the "unknown device" actually is de group of quicklaunch buttons. Can you please tell me where you downloaded the software for it. I cannot find them anywhere....

Hi, I'm sorry to be so late in replying, but I didn't look at my email until just a few minutes ago. I suspect you are right, the unknown device is most likely for the Quick Launch buttons. I found the driver at a site called www. opendrivers.com. I no longer have the HP service pack number;the drivers were actually for another model number but the worked fine. The key is to find drivers for hpq006, I did a search for hp drivers and scrolled down until I found what I needed. I suspect this site changes every so often, so the drivers may no longer be listed.

I just put XP Pro on my computer and now I have to go and find all the drivers. I looked at the bottom of my laptop to the identification label, and it says that the computer is obviously a dv5000, but there is another notation of dv5151us..

Any suggestions? And I wish that the computer listed the names of the devices so that it would be easier to find the drivers...

Yepper, first start your own thread. That's so there is no confusion in posts.
