HP Photosmart Printer scanner won't scan

It scanned the page for alignment when i changed the ink but it still won't scan anything else. I get a message that says 'Scan error. Try printing from computer or see documentation.' Well, there's no way to scan it from the computer. So what si going on ? Obviously the scanner itself works. BTW I am trying to scan to the computer.

Enter the model number of your particular printer, download the full software package, and install. An icon will appear on your desktop, and it will be labeled by the model printer you own.

Double click the icon, and one of the menu options will be to scan via the PC.

 

David GP, that isn't the error message I am getting. And there is no option to scan from computer when I open the printer icon. But I want to be able to just hit scan on the printer & have it scan.
As far as I can recall, we were able to scan when we first got this computer. So I thought it was a problem with the printer, not the computer.

 

Like I told David, I dont' WANT to have to scan from the computer. I will ask my DH later if we have scanned with this computer, I can't quite remember. But I will check this out if it might enable me to scan. I would like to know what's wrong with this printer, though. The scanner has always been a bit psychotic. If it wasn't attached to the printer, I would've thrown it off the roof a long time ago.
