Forget the docking station, HP software and USB cord.
The hardest part for me was trying to find sd cards that were no larger than 256 MB! I have a few but if they get corrupted, I won't be able to use the camera.

I own an HP camera since June 2003, a photosmart 320. A windows update broke something and from that point on, I could no longer see the pictures using HP's software. (It might have been in Windows 2K).

Remove the sd card, place it into a card reader (I have used a USB connected card reader and an internal card slot on computers) and you can move and/or copy your pictures from the card to the computer. At that point, you can burn the pictures to a CD for archiving before you start editing them.

I moved away from using the camera since I now own two tablets and a smart phone but in 2011, our home suffered extensive damage when 4 trees fell on it. I took all the pictures with the HP camera (It has a view finder which I prefer to the LCD screen). I was able to put the sd card into my Windows 7 computer and copy the pictures.
