My friends HP PSC 1315 printer has started making a screeching noise while printing. I recently updated the drivers through Microsoft Update, there were three available.

I went to the HP site to see trouble-shooting ideas and the suggestion was a possible paper jam. I followed the instructions to search for a paper jam and used a flashlight to see if I could find any small pieces of paper, but no luck. She can buy another printer if she has to do so but she likes the printer. HP stopped making this model.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks...

The motor could be going out on the printer.

How can I check on the motor?

I'm not sure. It's just one of my guesses.

Well she replaced her printer with another HP. I was surprised to see that she got the same features, scan, copy, FAX and a separate feed tray for about 60 bucks. The cable was included as well as starter ink. It seems to work well except installing their software added some toolbars to her Internet Explorer as well as some sort of edit and printing sidebar. It also changed associations for her pics and let's see, stopped the links from working in Outlook e-mails. I got it all fixed pretty quickly. I have to figure out you can scan and copy without having to use their software suite.

    Thanks again for the response.

Best guess would be the toner cartridge. There's a wiper blade inside that could cause the noise. The scanner motor doesn't spin fast enough to generate that loud a noise, at least I've never heard one do it. You can take the toner cartridge out, flip it over, open the shutter and manually turn the drum around. You should be able to duplicate the noise on a smaller scale.

There is a cork pad in the input part of the paper feed path. When it gets dirty, it makes ascreeching sound whenever paper is dragged across it. Cleaning, buffing, and/or replacing it will fix the noise.
