HP Scanjet 2200c Suddenly Not Detected

Ok, I have a pretty old setup. I got my computer and scanner and all that when I went to college back in 2001, so I realize this is all a bit old school, but anyway... here's the deal.

I have an HP Pavilion 9900 desktop that came with Windows ME on it. I had some computer issues in college and the person who tried to fix it put XP on it, which I have had ever since. My scanner isn't officially compatible with XP, but I've never had any problems with it until yesterday when I suddenly went to scan and the computer was not detecting it anymore. I've had the XP on here for about four or so years now, and the computer and scanner have physically moved with me a couple of different times, and each time I set the stuff back up, everything has been fine.

The hard thing is, I don't use it a lot, so I can't pinpoint its not working to anything really specific that I may have done. I've definitely used it in the last couple of months or so, but not super duper recently. Anyway, the only thing I can think of (which I doubt would be related at all) is that I had WinZip, which I totally didn't need, and annoyed me, so I uninstalled it. I also uninstalled a couple of other things, I think (don't remember what), but I don't think it was anything even remotely related to the scanner.

So, here's what I've tried. I tried downloading drivers for it from online, because between six years with this thing and an ungodly amount of moving in and out during college and afterward, I cannot remember what I did with any CDs I had for it at the moment. I tried restarting the computer a couple of times and trying it again. I've unplugged and re-plugged. The only thing I was a bit too scared to try was removing it entirely and adding it again. I also tried adding it under Scanners and Cameras (or whatever it's called in Control Panel), but when I used the wizard to do that, I clicked on Hewlett-Packard, and it only gave me three choices and they were all cameras, and I was unable to proceed with that.

So, I feel like I've tried everything I know how to do, and the troubleshooting is no help, because it's not technically compatible with XP, but I know it works, because it's worked for four years with my XP, as I said.

I need help! I really hope somebody can help me and BIG thanks in advance to anyone who can!

Turn the scanner on before you boot up the computer.
Is it showing up in device manager or has it completely disappeared?
I'll search to see if anyone got it working on XP and what they had to do to get it to work.
    I found this
You can order the CD from here
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=57854&lang=en So it doesn't seem to be unsupported in XP as you thought.

My scanner, which is older than yours, would not work on windows 2000. One of the MS updates broke it on the 98SE it was attached to. My options were to start removing the patches or try to get it working on an OS it wasn't designed for. I searched and fortunately someone had worked out a method for installing it on 2K. I'll check to see if anyone has gone through a similar procedure for your scanner and XP. (I don't use my scanner enough to justify buying another one and I have three working printers so I don't need to buy an AIO device).

That is my feeling - totally not worth buying a new one. The thing is, I don't really want to order that CD either, since it was working for years on my computer with XP. Now that it's not, is that the only way to make it work? I don't get it.

Unfortunately, I couldn't tell you if it shows up in the device manager, as the scanner has no on/off switch. It turns itself off or goes dormant or something until you push a scan or copy button, or go into the program and click that you want to scan.

Any other ideas? This sucks. :(

I know you are trying to help me, and I really appreciate it a lot, so I don't want this to come across in the wrong way at all, but can you please read my post in iits entirety before posting? The very first thing I did was download the drivers. What I need help with is getting the scanner to work. When I look at scanners and cameras in the control panel, it is not present, and when I went through the wizard to add it, there was no way for me to select it from the menu they gave. This is the only way for me to scan or copy anything and I really need help getting it working again. Even if it was worth getting a new one, we simply don't have the money right now to do that.

Thank you very much to whoever is able to help me! I really appreciate it!

OK, your printer will work with just a driver, your scanner needs the HP software that came with the printer, its a pretty large download if you cant find the disc. ed

After looking, did you download the 41 mb. download? The last one i got for a deskjet was 166mb. If it will not work with that software i would guess something is broke, is the lamp working? ed

It's been a while now. I'm not entirely sure what I downloaded, but it probably wasn't the right thing. It was drivers, but I don't know how big the file was. There is nothing wrong with my printer - just the scanner, which is entirely separate from my printer.

Here's the problem: I can scan/copy a couple of different ways. I can either go into the programs for scanning and copying on my computer and it will start to scan/copy, or I can press the scan or copy button on the scanner itself. No matter which way I do it, the scanner does nothing at all. However, if I open the program on the computer, it gives me an error message and the scanner does nothing. If I press the buttons on the scanner, nothing happens on the scanner and nothing happens on the computer (i.e. the program doesn't open). Does that help eliminate any possibilities? Should I buy the CD? I REALLY don't want to, but if that is the only way to make it work, I guess I would. I don't use it all that often, but now that I don't have it, it's been very annoying, as I have needed to use it several times.

    Thanks again for your advice/help!
