HP Scanjet 3970 won't scan

Hello,
My HP scanjet 3970 will turn on, the lamp warms up, and begin to scan but the lamp won't move. Does anyone have any idea why? I was thinking that the gears were stuck or something. Therefore, I was wondering if it would be possibly to open it and clean the gears? Does anyone know how to do that or can point to a place were I can learn?

when I did the test, the carriage moved back and forth. However, when I try to scan it doesn't move? Any suggestions?

 

Make sure you have the USB cord plugged in correctly. Step 7 in the link I gave you.

Yes, my USB cord is plugged in correctly. As I stated before, the scanner "obtains" an image on my computer but the carriage doesn't move to obtain the image (I attached a copy of what it "scans"). When I do scanner hardware test it works. Any ideas?

 

anyone have any idea of what is going on and how to fix this problem?

Why dont you try unhooking the printer completely, uninstall software. reinstall, this has to be a software problem. ed
