    Hello
My new scanner. HP4370 Scanjet, will not scan. I bought the scanner in Nov, 2005 and just scanned a few documents previously, it seemed to work fine then. The USB connection is fine. The power connection is good. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software which it said was correctly installed. On installation it stated the connection was good. When I try scanning the carriage moves just a fraction then reseats itself. Of course the next time I try scanning the DDE is still open and I get an error message saying it can't connect. I am running Windows XP Home. I have 512 MB of RAM on an AMD Athlon 64 that is 6 months old.
When I tried scanning yesterday I had a page of vertical colored lines. I did have a speaker on the shelf about 2 feet above the scanner and suspected it may have been magnetic interference I moved the speaker and shut them off.

Hello - I trashed my HP Scanner around a year ago with a similar problem and now have a little Cannon which cheerfully does all asked of it (and at half what I paid for the HP. That said you could try this

    SCANNER NOT WORKING
The Still Image Monitor may not be running on your computer.
Click START > RUN > type MSCONFIG > click OK. Click on the STARTUP tab. Locate the SillImageMonitor (that is how it reads) or STIMON. Put the checkmark back in and click OK. It will prompt you to reboot your computer. Click yes. When you are done, the scanner will now work normally.

I am not the guru responsible for that good advice but give it a go anyway - else return to the retailer and have it checked out.
    Happy New Year

My old HP flatbed scanner managed to corrupt its drivers every few months, forcing a reinstall. They tend to be somewhat quirky. I also managed to fry one by accidentally hooking up a printer power supply (looked just the same) to it. If your power plugs are the same (appearance) better label them, unless they are all the same voltage and polarity.

In your case, you might want to check to see if someone disabled any of the autoruns (HP scanners run several apps, most starting with HP but also the STIMON mentioned in an earlier post.

Go to HPs troubleshooting section and allow it to scan your system and detect the hardware. Then allow it to scan for troubleshooting needs. I have done this a few times with printers and scanners at the office. Does not fix everything, but has saved me several hours on hold with tech support. Also, on the HP site, you can do a live chat session with tech support. I have found this helpful sometimes. And, it keeps you from talking to someone on the phone that struggles with the English language.
