    HP Pavilion Slimline S7210N.

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=1137823#N1042

Wiped it for the first time in ages to give to a family member. Went to the HP site to download the original drivers, including the motherboard drivers.

Installed all five drivers, I'm getting an "ethernet controller" and "PCI device" yellow question mark.

Seeing that the motherboard has this embedded into the system, I tried downloading the actual ethernet driver from Intel directly (according to HPs site, the Onboard Lan is an Intel 82562GT, see below).

So I went to Intel to download it directly, tried installing that, and it's still not working. I'm getting way out of my tech league here, so figured I'd elevate it a step higher and see what I could get.

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi

Try this and grab the Chipset drivers the latest ones for your 915GV chipset from HERE, then reboot.

Then install these LAN drivers HERE

Sorry for the delay; the drivers seem to have worked, but now it's not letting me on the internet.

I plugged a hardline into the machine, and now, every five seconds, it checks for an internet connection, gives me the "Cannot connect to the Internet" red X through the network connection logo, and then tries again.

But we're making progress. Thanks Halo.

    Hi

At least we know the drivers work ok as you wouldnt be able to connect, just now need to see whats causing the problem, so some thoughts below

    1. Boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking) and can you connect ok, without the dropouts?
    2. Check and reboot your router modem.
    3. Check that your router/modem doesnt have a firmware update? (if you can name the make and model we can also check for you)
    4. What security applications do you have installed? please name all of them, and also disable them to test that they are not blocking the connection.

What Windows version and Service Pack are you using?

Cannot connect in Safe Mode. Brings up the error screen when using the default IE.

Using an old Win XP with SP 2 on it.

Already rebooted modem and router, maybe plug directly into modem?

    "The Page Cannot Be Displayed"
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings".

    That one.

Also, plugged the modem directly into the back of the computer, restarted in safe mode with networking, and still nothing.

    Hi

Plus try this also, download CCLeaner and run it and use the Cleaner option and then the registry option, run the registry one until no items are listed for removal.

Then click Start > Run and type CMD and hit enter, then type ipconfig /flushdns (may need to do this a few times)

In xp network connections folder (Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections > Network Connections) what is listed? a screenshot (may need to crop it to only the network window) would be helpful of this window and how to attach this info guide HERE
