It worked earlier today, but now it won't boot. Turn power on, a few led lights come on and the fan starts, black screen. Then it appears to turn off or hesitate and then repeats the pattern over and over. I get no HP logo or anything, just a black screen. Got the install discs, but don't know how to start from them. Tried starting holding the F8 key and nothing. I know nothing about this machine. Thanks for any and all help.

Try clearing the CMOS. Remove battery and A/C power. Hold the power button in for 30 seconds, then put back battery and A/C power and see if you get the HP screen.

Same thing. Black screen fan & led pulsate. That's it.

Please give the model number from the tag on the bottom. I'll take a look at the manual.
Do the led lights flash in any pattern? Is it only certain lights that flash-like caps lock?

Does no battery, just AC make a difference?

HP Pavilion dv6700. Lights flash? No pattern, just the entire upper row above the keys, adjacent to the power button. (as though it were one long light) As the lights come on, so does the fan, and the all go off together. And this repeats until you hold down the power button to turn off.
And no difference if just AC or battery.

I'll take a look later today. That D6000 series has a lot of problems with the graphics adapter. It is a known flaw that HP never did much to address.

I think I would just take the battery out and remove AC power and let it sit for a couple hours and then try starting to see if any change. Not getting even the HP screen is a bad sign and I am not sure what can be done. Since it just started maybe letting it cool down will tell us if it is an intermittent problem or more permanent.

Removed the battery and left sit over night. Same results. Is the hard drive bad?

    thanks

If you don't get the HP screen it is more fundamental than the HD. You should get the HP screen no matter what. I think it is a graphics problem but HP's fix is to replace the system board which is expensive for an older laptop. I'm not going to be able to give any real help. I'll just post a few links so you can get an idea of the situation. I'm sorry I can't be of more help.
