HP xw4400 with USB problem

So, I have this HP workstation here at work and I can't get it to mount a USB Flash drive to save my life. When I plug the drive in I get the normal windows dink dink out of it, but can't find the drive anywhere.

Any ideas??

What OS are you running?

Does the flash drive have U3?

Did you look in the Device Manager to see if it has an issue with your OS?

 

It's rare, but sometimes USB flash drives need to be initialized and formatted for them to work properly. I've seen it 2 or 3 times. Right click My Computer, click Manage, double click Storage, double click Disk Management. If the flash drive is listed (you may have to scroll down a bit), right click on the bold type where it lists the drive as 'Drive 1:' or maybe 'Drive E:' or whatever. Then click on Initialize. After it's initialized you should be able to right click in the white area next it and select format. Choose the FAT system (you probably won't have a choice) and format it. All should be well after that. Good luck, and keep us posted!

BTW- all the stuff above applies to WinXP or Win2000 only.

Running XP Pro, no this does not have U3, and there are no issues with the OS.

 

I wanted to thank everyone for the help. As I followed hopperdave2000's advice I found that my USB drive some how got the same drive letter as one of my network drives. So, I changed it and all is working fine now.
