This desktop has one choice, notepad.

If your laptop has Excel and Word, that is so because they were installed. Clearly, some version of Microsoft Office is installed on your laptop. Your desktop, on the other hand, does not have Microsoft Office installed.

Notepad is the simple text editor bundled with all Windows computers. Likewise, WordPad is bundled with all Windows computers. WordPad is a basic word processor; in other words, it has more features than Notepad.

You should be able to print from both Notepad and Wordpad on your desktop. If you cannot, then you apparently do not have a printer correctly installed on your desktop.

By the way, why did you title your forum question "html editing msie 9"? Your actual question has nothing whatsoever to do with "html editing msie 9".

    Thank you for replying.
I have MS Home and Student 2010 installled on both machines yet as I say start>internet options>programs> only the laptop has three choices. The desktop only has notepad.
A Dell tech quickly did something without my ok with file associations some time ago. I think that had something to do with it.
The most recent event that perplexes me is that when I try to browse as in converting one file to another, Word is not there.
A Dell tech looked everywhere. He traced the path only to find it not there. No one can find Word yet I have the Office Suite -I reinstalled Office to be sure. Not having Word when I browse is a problem which I woud like to resolve. This may tie in with the original notepad issue I wrote about.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

I can't make sense of your post. "internet options" is not an item on Windows Start menu.

I thought you knew where internet options was so I took a short cut.
    Start>control panel>network and internet>internet options>programs.

Btw, I have another word related problem which is that I right click on a file and Word does not appear as an option as it does on the laptop.
The path for word is invalid and I suspect the registry is corrupted.
When you follow the path where word should be it is not there. A Dell tech coud not find it either. I have uninstalled Office, cleaned it out and reinstalled but it does no good.

Is Office Home and Student edition listed when you click All Program? Scroll down so you can see the programs starting with M.

Open Word, type some sort of sample docx and then try and print it. What happens?

Open word and type something, anything as a sample to test. Office 2007/2010 saves documents with a docx extension - that's what I meant.

    Thanx to those who helped.
When reinstalling MS office from office.com/backup, and you have a 64 bit pc, you have to look under the default 32 but box and find the little adv options.
The instructions are confusing as they say you cannot have 32 bit and 64 bit program on th same pc. Having both MS Essentials and MSE I did not know what to do. 32 bit causes a conflicting pathway and effects the HTML editor and ones ability to browse with Word. You have to select the 64 bit if your pc is 64 bit.
After asking for large money from me by both Dell and MS, and after Dell making a mess of machine, I have formatted, reinstalled and imaged to my usb HDD. I luckily selected that obscure 64 bit option that was causing the trouble.
    Thanx again
    Peter
