want to make a couple of copys of my xp system partition image on dvd-r. I have an image stored here on same drive in a partition. Made rescue disc (Win PE). Used once and worked. When I used Free Macrium to make the image I tried selecting DVD rom as destination, but would not work. I do not know why. Perhaps this computer needs aid of burning software to do that.
Also tried burning image to dvd-r after creating. Maybe i am going about this all wrong. I got the message "Invalid or unsupported image file format". Could this be I selected some wrong option when creating ?
    I also found this

and I think this explains how to make you rescue cd or dvd with your image on same disc. I was confused by part 6 of the procedure.
I suppose, since my image is slightly less than 4gb, that won't fit with the rescue media (1.7 gb) on one dvd. Some of yu are thinking why not just store your image on a external HDD or flash drive. Well, that wouldn't pose much of a challenge would it ? Used the burner recently after having a problem with it. It works perfectly.
Any ideas - help much appreciated !!

    How large is the image?
My images are too large to fit on one DVD. When I run Acronis and indicate I intend to write to DVDs instead of putting the images on an external hd, it breaks the image, as it is creating it into DVD sized chunks and tells me when to remove one DVD and put in the next one.

The image is just less than 4gb.(3.89). That is xp with updates thru march 15th,2014. which I could probably do without the security updates. I ,mean I dont know if there is any point.
    Thanks for reply !!!

Honestly, if I had an extra hard drive, flash drive, I would go use that. Any ideas what I am doing or not doing wrong ?

I do use Macrium free but don't use DVDs normally. However I just imaged a small hard disk partition to DVD and the only thing I wasn't expecting was Macrium needing to format the DVD first, which it did. The backup finished normally.

As you have already created your rescue disc it isn't failing for need of burning software, and the process is so simple I couldn't see any place you could get it wrong, so I think this has to be some peculiarity of either the discs you are using or the drive itself.

When it fails is there any error message?

No. It never even starts. I don't remember anything about macrium formatting the disc. Maybe I will go back and try again after I copy my data. Have a little work to do before i can.

You used a DVD-R, so are you sure it was blank? I used a previously used DVD-RW and everything went smoothly. I don't know anything about the format it creates but even if you erase the disc afterwards, as I did, it still shows 100% used in Explorer and has to be formatted again in Windows before it can be written to again.

We'll take that as confirmation the DVD-R wasn't blank then ;)

Still not working. I just finished filling up a dvd-r with mp3's. Have to use software to do that, but is no problem. It copys pics without software.
Do I need to burn the disc as the image is being created, I mean choose dvd-rom as destination when it creates ?
I read on another forum where someone was trying to include the image with the Rescue disc. They used 3 discs before discovering that with the free version you do not get the option to use that. They indicated that the image could be copied .Not sure what was meant by copied.
So I went to my image, clik'd copy and pointed to drive E:(DVDROM). It appeared to be copying. I let it finish with no disc in the tray. I then put in the dvd-r to tray. The box appeared asking what to do. No options to simply copy. Option for burning disc with Image Burn was there. Option for burning with CD Burner xp was there.

You simply choose the DVD drive as the destination - that's all there is to it.

Just to add to the above, of course you have to put the disk in the drive BEFORE starting the backup operation. Same goes for copying images from HDD to DVD - that's how all file copy operations work.

As you have been able to copy other stuff to DVD-R without problems I rather doubt that will fix it. To minimise the expense and frustration I would get some DVD-RWs. That's what I used, no problems.

Are you trying to burn your image to a dvd rom or dvd-rw drive? You can't burn anything using a dvd rom drive...maybe you pointed the software to the wrong drive...

Yes I know I read that but he did point his image to a dvd-rom so he said...so I was thinking maybe he was getting the two drives confused...
