Does anyone know how to properly share the internet to 2 computers using a HUB? One computer is a MAC and the other is windows. The modem is going into the HUB but for some reason I'm only allowed to receive connectivity on 1 computer, Why?

Because, unless there is a router in the picture, the cable/dsl modem only issues ONE IP address. If your cable/dsl modem is connected to the hub, only the first machine that requests an IP address from the modem will receive one.

If you purchase a multiport router, then your two machine will be able to access the Internet without a problem.

Hub's aren't used for internet connectivity. Switches and routers are used for internet access. Hub's are more for data. Try using a router or switch.

To effectively resolve your problem, #1 you need to connect your windows box to the internet....via modem, dsl...whatever. #2 turn internet connection sharing on on the windows box. #3 connect the network card on the windows box to the hub via network cable. #4 connect your mac to the hub via network cable. #5 setup ip addresses on both computer to be within the same subnet but not the same address for both i.e. 192.168.0.1 for the windows box (it will default to that when you setup internet connection sharing) and then assign 192.168.0.2 for the MAC. Then the subnet mask for both needs to be 255.255.255.0, then the gateway address should be the address of the windows box because it is the connection to the internet. so the gateway should be 192.168.0.1 on both boxes. Once this is all done...you should be sharing an internet connection.

Just to clarify a bit......if the machine that you are sharing the Internet connection with is not powered on or gets booted you will lose your Internet connectivity until it comes up again. The router solution gives you a little more flexability....your call though.

I agree as long as you have a high speed connection. But to my knowledge Cisco isn't producing dialup modem's that have routing capabilities to th e LAN.
