Hello, i was having major problems with Mircosoft word and i really need word to operate correctly for my work. Basically at first the whole program word won't open. So i searched around and learned i had to rename the file "normal.dot" to "abnormal.dot" and it worked, the program opened. However when i try and open a document the whole program freezes and the only way to get word open again is that i have to re-search normal.dot, and delete a newly created normal.dot that was created. Doing this only gets Word to open again, however it still won't open a document.

I've already tried reinstalling, uninstalling, repairing, and it hasn't worked. So i'm hoping someone knows what to do because i'm really having some trouble here.

thanks for taking the time to read

Have you deleted all renamed and original normal.dot copies and then tried opening Word? It will auto create a brand new normal.dot Also delete any called ~normal.dot, ~ormal.dot or ~$normal.dot

Yes there's four of the normal.dot copies that i renamed, and i see the one that auto creates and i have to delete that for word to open, but it still doesn't solve the problem of letting me open documents.

What happens exactly when you try to open existing documents? Does it freeze or just do nothing, or shut down? Or do you get an error message - if so, what is it?

If you are running Norton AntiVirus (NAV), or Norton SystemWorks, which incorporates NAV, there may be a conflict between the Norton AntiVirus plug-in for Microsoft Office and another third party add-in that you have installed.

Disable Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in and see what happens.

No i don't have Norton's i have AVG thanks for the post though. But this is so strange, i'm still having problems, i even completly uninstalled microsoft office and it still has the same problem. I just now deleted all the normal.dot's i renamed, and still i can not open documents. i have no idea at this point

I know that you reinstalled, but I would try a "repair" one more time.

Are you adding any plug-in's and do you have any Peachtree software installed?

Go to Word's Tools menu and click on Templates and Addins, you will get a dialog box that lists all addins. Look for anything that might have been added by another program........especially Peachtree and remove it/them.
