I'm gonna embarrass you, darlin'! :wave :heart :-D

If you followed the thread about my computer explosion, you know Stubby offered me first a power supply (which I ended up not needing) and then a motherboard (which I did). We made our arrangements.

He sent me a whole box of stuff! I'm now looking at a motherboard (which came with the instruction manual even!), TWO AMD processors, three sticks of RAM, and the I/O panel to go with it. I spent most of today working on it, and it's up and running! :clap

Only problem is my brain was already kinda fried and I've done some boneheaded thing so it does not recognize my hard drive...it thinks I only have a floppy and a CD-RW. But I know that's because I'm not thinking clearly, so I've stopped working on it until I get out of work tomorrow. The main thing is that I've got essentially a new machine, and Stubby made it all possible.

Never give up on the kindness of strangers! And rest assured, when it's possible I will definitely pay it forward (in fact, I'll probably end up building my mother a machine out of what's left and what I've got in the closet for Mother's Day). I really, really appreciate it, more than you'll ever know. :cloud9

Kinda' restores a little of your faith in humanity. Stubby, you're a soul who reminds me of that idiot I know whose heart is bigger than his wallet...

    To Stubby.
    Way to go, Guy.
I have given parts freely to help people get there machines back up, but never that much at one time.
Rather than be embarassed, be proud that you were able to make someone happy. Something more people should strive to do.
    Hats off to you.:wave:cool

WHAT??? It actually works??? I must have sent you the wrong parts!!:eek Seriously, I'm just glad it worked out for you Beth and you are more than welcome! Now you have NO excuse not to frequent MGs more often!!;) For the last couple of weeks, I always checked my PMs first, for obvious reasons, and tonight I was just going to check them and hit the sack. If it wouldn't have been for hrlow2, I wouldn't have found this thread until tomorrow. Thanks hrlow2!! As for being embarressed, well maybe just a wee bit, but knowing that everything is working out for you, then it's cool!!:cool

Sarge, what am I going to do with you??? I mean, you even got the manual with it!!:-D Remind me to never send my 'puter to you for repair!roflmaoroflmao Just a word of advice, if you have a cable that has TWO ends on it and one end fits into the HDD.....oh never mind, you suffered enough!!:-D Okay guys and gals, let's back off for now....or at least wait until Augie and Fred_G get hereroflmao

augiedoggie The Canadian Loon - LocoAugie (R.I.P. 2012)

Sorry Stubbs, I can't and will not laugh at an honest mistake or omission. Mainly because I did that too with a SATA drive, the darn cable didn't click in and I kept getting a loose connection and I didn't know any better until I found the problem and hot-glued it in.;) This thread should be part of a hardware 101 thread.:)

Good to see you get it going Sgt..:cool

  26. Stubby

    Stubby R.I.P. (September 3, 1949 - January 26, 2011)

"If one can laugh at ones own mistakes....the world will laugh with them!" That was the intention of the last part of my post....NOT to make fun of it. I was laughing WITH her...not AT her. There is a considerable difference.

  29. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

Did you also whack yourself on the forehead with the heel of your hand when you figured it out? LOL

Meh...I knew I was tired, but I wanted my machine up and running and took the chance. At least I was smart enough to walk away from it until I'd gotten some sleep. :-D

I've consulted with my sisters, by the way, and they're chipping in for the few things I need to make mom a computer for Mother's Day. Which means Stubby has also contributed to replacing a 73-year-old woman's IBM Aptiva which she bought in something like 1995 (I know it's running Windows 3.1 and has a 32MB HDD LOL).

Wohoo! Congratulations on the new computer! :celebrate

And big kudos on two things: Realizing that you were too tired yesterday and backing away rather than stubbornly continuing to try and make it work. And on sharing the cable incident with us so we can all get a good laugh. :major

I did it the other away around. I forgot to connect the hard drive end of the cable. LOL

  32. hrlow2

And a thank you to Mimsy for filling us in on that.

Yeah, I made a mistake once and then I realized that the mistake I made was thinking I made a mistake! See, no one's perfect roflmaoroflmao However, if I laughed everytime I made a mistake, I'd undoubtly die laughing:-D
